While replacing some door hardware, my fiance stripped a few of the hinge screws the previous owners had painted over. No problem I thought- I'll just get some screw extractors:

They worked a few screws, but it's like the extraction side of the bit doesn't have enough "bite" to grab the screw. I tried stepping the size up as that happened... but even that didn't get all of them.

Before I spend more money on spiral extractors, is there anything I am over looking here?

I find the spiral extractors work better.
They grab better, and are much easier to beat into the hole you drilled. Yes, I said beat into the hole. Tapping the extractor into the hole with a hammer will make it bite into the bolt much better.

Do yourself a favor, buy a tap holder.
Don’t use vise grips or pliers to try and turn the extractor. You’ll end up putting uneven torque on the extractor and it will just cam out of the bolt.

You can find a cheap tap holder at the parts store.

I just needed to hear that the spiral ones work better.

Copy on taping the flutes in.
Copy on using the tap tool (I have plenty of them).

I had a set of the ones in the first picture.
I threw them in the trash after the first time I used them. It only seemed to Drill the hole out more. Garbage.

Couldn't get 'em with the spiral bits either.

I ended up drilling the heads off completely (to fully remove the hinge plate), then use a 1" hole saw without the pilot bit to cut out the remaining screw body from the casing, plugging it with 1" dowel, and rerouting the hinge mortise and re/predrill the hole.

Fuck people that paint over hinges and door hardware- you're the worst.
