Tacomas are not underpowered

People dont like, or arent used to, flooring the gas to get into the power bands in a reasonable amount of time.

whats zero to sixty, 30 seconds? How many people seldomly get to 3500rpm on this truck? I would say over 90% of the owners. Same amount who never leave 2wd as well)

the acceleration, not just the toe in, are shit on this truck. A tune is a band aid.

feel the power = 10mpg avg

btw I have driven more minivans than anyone.

 

Sea level hp rating doesn’t mean much for an N/A engine. They’re less than 230 hp where I live. It’s a dog even with 4.88s. Can’t wait for turbo/hybrid fourth gen!

The Tacoma is underpowered and slow as molasses. I didn’t expect it to be anything else so I’m not disappointed but to say otherwise is a lie to yourself and others. Not to mention the lag, you put the pedal to the floor and it takes 1.5 seconds before anything even starts to happen. And yeah I’ve tuned.

 

Why buy a truck that you hate? Are you kidding me?

 

ECT just changes the shift points to higher in the RPM band. You don't get extra magic power lol

I've said this here time and time again. You've got a whole tachometer. If you want to go faster, just push the pedal down. You're not gonna blow up an engine designed to run at its rev limit by running it at its rev limit. It's a high RPM V6. Run it at the upper end of the tach if you need to do so.

 

Underpowered and detuned. This is what gives the Tacoma such longevity.

 

Yep. The power is there if you need it, and you aren't going to ruin the motor using it. The same engine runs all sorts of hopped up in the lexus vehicles and it's completely fine.

 

They have power and weigh on par with full size trucks of the late 90s.

 

I don’t understand comparisons with vehicles from 30 years ago. What matters is how the trucks perform against today’s other vehicles and expectations.

Nobody on the on-ramp behind you cares that you’re merging faster than a 1993 T100.

 

Understood, but when people say tacomas are underpowered it drives me nuts. Yes, they drive like mini vans, my point was just that the power is there at 4000 rpm’s, smash the gas folks!

 

I went from a Tacoma to a new Tundra Hybrid. I will say the Tacoma is really underpowered. 4000 rpm for a mountain pass call 1500 rpm. The difference in effort and gas is staggering.

 

It's not under powered, it just makes power in the wrong places for this application.

 

I also strongly disagree with the underpowered claim. And I’ve been driving mine daily for 5+ years now. No tune, no throttle mods, no ECT.

Yes, the throttle has a significant lag and yes, you have the mash the pedal harder than you do in most vehicles, but once you learn how to drive it, there is plenty of power. Honestly, I have to be cautious when I’m driving downtown not to bolt out of intersections too quickly and squeal my tires.

 

It’s ok. Having a manual transmission helps. I guess gears/tune/ECT for the auto guys—no experience. It seems much quicker than my 23 4Runner (with the fabled 4.0 torque monster)

 

I must be driving a different gen3 tacoma. Mine is stock, and will smoke my old 4.7 tundra in a heartbeat. It is far from slow....yeah, if compared to muscle cars out there. It's not that far off of competitors mid size trucks either. My tacoma rarely sees more the 3k rpm, doing 99% of the jobs before that. Idk how much power you guys need unless you gotta be the big dog off mid size pickups.

 

I don’t see. Any tacos as heavy work trucks. I do see them as a truck with”pretty add-on” I know I’ll get grief for that startment but look around. I love my taco, she is comfortable enough as a truck, able to go to the lumber yard, carry the dirt from the home garden store but “pretty” enough to cruise around town. How many states it having the manual transmission is so much better than an automatic.

I guess I’m old and lazy. I kind of like the auto transmission. If I also find that with the use of the sport mode, I can control the transmission quite a bit like a manual. That when used with the ECT button, I have absolutely no desire to have a manual transmission.

 

Slant six? Lol! They were horribly under powered and slow even among it's contemporary's.

 

My wife's CH-R will smoke my Taco until I get to 3000RPM's and then it's no contest. LOL.
