A question to all the overlanders on why you chose a truck with a bed (or deck) instead of a fully enclosed vehicle like an SUV, wagon, van, etc.

There is method to my madness and I will update this first post after your replies come in. Thanks for your input and interest.

Only because its not a dedicated vehicle and needs to fulfil other purpose. If it was only overlanding/ camping etc. 4x4Van (Delica) or SUV(with inside sleep capacity) FTW all. day. long.

The bed still has its perks for overlanding, tailgate table, dirty and oversized storage, etc.. The security, clean space, and interior sleeping possibilities can be real boons depending on your specific travels. ie. want to pull in a city and stay somewhere a tent would be unwelcome, being able to lock up bikes and valuables very securely, etc... I guess a camper shell or alucab achieves this so truck still wins on overall versitility i guess

Versatility. Well and the 4runner doesn't come in manual any more. I want the ability to take the whole families bikes around town when we are not overlanding. Also I can still pull the rack off and use it as a normal truck when needed.
