new tacoma not impressed, turbo, and battery

I don't like turbos or hybrids. scotty kilmer says a engine with a turbo will never last as long as one without.

As a current 1997 tacoma V6 owner with zero issues and zero repairs over the last 26 years there is no way this new 2024 tacoma will last that long without repairs for one thing the battery would need replacing serval times.

Replacing the battery or turbos at 150k would cost you more than what you saved in gas over the miles and does the new tacoma have a auto/on/off switch like the new tundra? that alone wears things out quicker.

Now i feel like the 2023 model would last 27 years.

In case you havent been paying attention since 1997, Ford introduced the ecoboost 10 years ago to trucks and and their engines have been solid with no major problems and many of those well over 150k. The only thing that should be in question here is Toyota's version of turbos, but the technology is been out and well proven now. Also, you don't have to get the hybrid with the 2024 models and they will still make more power than in 1997.

 

My guess is that it will last as long as any other Toyota when properly maintained. His guess is without data and my guess based on Toyota's past longevity with hybrid and turbos (non US market) is proven. My guess is as good as his or anyone else's.

 

Scotty Kilmer?

 

The most legendary and overbuilt engine Toyota made is the 2JZ. This 2.4 won't come close to the reputation, but time will tell how solid they are. Toyota is all in on this 2.4T replacing the 3.5 across both Lexus and Toyota.

I have put 85,000 miles on my Subaru WRX, and it has been a better built machine with less issues than my 2016 Corolla was with only 37,000 miles. (AKA it has had zero issues, and the Corolla completely failed to start on me once)

 

Bud…every one of Toyota’s flagship 4x4 off-road rigs (Hilux, LC Prado, LC 70 series, etc) for the last 3+ decades have used turbo charged diesel motors to traverse inhospitable parts of the world that would eat your NA Taco for breakfast.

Toyota knows how to design & build a reliable turbo motor. Don’t let Scotty get your undergarments all bunched up over nothing lol

In reality if we want a great mid size truck we will most likely be buying a truck with a turbo.That’s the trend based on regulations. The real question is how many will go for the hybrid or EV truck going forward.

 

Not sure about the battery, but I would work on the assumption that the turbo should be rebuilt around 150K. No idea how much it would cost.

 

I have a 2019 M4 with 170K + trouble free miles. If BMW can do it so can Toyota. As for Scotty Kilmer.. He’s about as good of a source as those guys on TFL.

 

According to chief engineer of the Tacoma: Sheldon Brown the turbo is spec'd to heavy duty commercial spec instead of your typical consumer spec. Also the hybrid battery is the same type as the Prius which has at least 2 decades of improvements so Toyota know what they are doing.

I just bought a 2021 tundra with 19k miles, i wanted to get it since i hated the new one, i can't believe they put the auto start stop crap on the new one, no V8 option plus it looks like a fish out of water. All for 2MPG better.

It's a truck who cares about the gas milage you buy it to lift it and to run larger tires.
