Just looked through the diagrams, looks like it changed in 98.
95-97 the safety switches break the ground side, 98-04 they break the power side and Pin 2 of the relay goes straight to ground.

Toyota parts have become so expensive.....you're gonna find all kinds of workarounds...

when you buy a barn taco.....

ITs a tough call between a $145 shipped to you neutral safety switch....
or a 1 cent paper clip that comes with spares......

Got a little over zealous....cant save everybody....

remember I just ask the stupid questions....didnt say I had any answers...

To truely see whats going on.....I'd have to see wiring diagram with the neutral switch and clutch for a 2001.....which I dont have a FSM for....

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
that is why looking at the correct year diagram is so critical at least to me.

You were right....I had a heck of a time finding a complete diagram.....instead of bits and pieces...

They definitely jumped shipped there....still not clear how the ecm connects to the starter relay...
    that's not revealed...

Wiring Diagrams - Toyota Tacoma Truck Starting System.jpg

I notice they had to start using diodes and 'resistance' wires to make it work...
the old way was much simpler and easier to diagnose..

I definitely benefited from this thread.....now I have a clear way to start the truck if my neutral switch goes south...
run a hail marry ground wire....

And I can check the operation of that neutral switch right at the fuse box....

I can grab you the diagram for yours later, what engine do you have?

PCM isn't involved in the starting circuit on 1st and 2nd gens other than it gets a start signal to turn the fuel pump on.

No resistance wires, the diode is probably there to prevent backfeeding but I'd need to study the circuit closer to fully understand it's pupose. Other than that it's a simple starting circuit, it just looks complicated on a diagram.

One thing I have learned working on vehicles is when you think you have seen it all something crazier rolls in....

I actually had one (GMC Acadia I think it was) try to crank while sitting in the bay at the shop with the hood up, it was like someone bumped the starter but it didn't keep cranking.
It did it again after it was parked outside, customer never mentioned anything about it.

Not sure what a rzn150 is?
    Should be a 2RZ (2.4L), 3RZ (2.7L), or 5VZ (3.4L).
Being a 98 it should follow the 98-04 system with the relay having constant ground and the safety switches being on the power side.
