okay, not for or against the metal housing or plastic. but I've worked as a tech. and i will say ive seen the plastic housing absolutely destroyed the fins snapped of. deep gouges in the housing on the plastic ones. from a young lube tech attempting to remove them with a pair of Filter pliers, seen them damaged by a strap wrench that slipped. seen them damaged when a lube tech tried to get a filter cup down on the housing. heck I've seen a kid jam a flat head into the fins and attempt to "tap" it free. ive also seen one of the housings put back on with the proper cup and cranked down in FT/LB not N.M like bad enough i needed a breaker bar to remove

See, there is your problem, not the composite...the dealers are frequently known for overtightening.

I have not come across even one story of it being difficult to remove or breaking if it was known to be torqued properly before.

I see one post that says it tightens up some after it heat cycles....that's all. Which is of course true, after the interval it is harder to remove than it was to install, but it won't tighten up so much that it can't be removed without being destroyed, unless it was too tight to begin with. The torque spec is hardly even a torque spec, it takes almost the torque spec just to thread the housing in all the way. You basically go until the housing stops and then no further.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't have gotten another composite housing, I'm just saying that the problems are still operator error. Unfortunately for you that was done by the dealer workers.

so, the moral to your story is "do not let anyone else touch your oil filter or car, because the techs are unqualified and ignorant apes".

Lots of these broken housing stories have a sheared off fins on the housing due to incorrect tool that doesn't not grab the bottom of the housing and all the force applied to fins.

    Physics.

The Oring does the sealing. A million lb/ft or 1 lb/ft doesn't make a difference. The Oring in there isn't going seal any more or any less.

Might as well buy a titanium filter canister. Or Tungsten.

techs, probably are fine. it's the fresh lube team who may not have the same level of life experiences, as a line Tech. I started as a lube guy. In an express lube place, got my foot in the door. and progressed until I left many years later. the person changing your oil is likely being paid just over minimum wage and not been trained on every vehicle. heck I had the head lube guy come over once on a brand new mini cooper, and on this one there is no dipstick for the oil, took a special filter we didn't even have in stock. I had to call a buddy at the time who worked for the mini dealership and was sending me pictures of locations and how to "check oil level"

now mind you i like to change my own oil. and I've not been in a shop since 2016, other than my own, and on occasion when a friend has called me for back up on a weekend.

this is the socket i have i think.

You should have bought the plastic socket. It's probably fine.

heck that was the "factory" tool we were supplied when I was there. parts manager came by and was handing them out as the canister filters arrived way back.

Am I the only one that threw that retention clip in the trash at the first oil change?

Idk, about these heat cycles causing the oil filter housing to tighten up. I did mine a year later after the last toyota care oil change, and it came unscrewed like butter....very easy with the motivx wrench. I think its got more to do with the last dumb ass tech that assembled it, if a breaker bar is needed.
