Payload and Tow capacities of Gas only models?

I saw 6500lbs and 1700lbs for Hybrid only models?

 

Actually the hybrid models are less because they carry the weight of the battery.

 

Hybrid 6,000lb max towing. Not sure how much less the hybrid’s payload will be when compared to the exact model non hybrid. Non hybrid has a max row of 6,500lbs.

 

Tow capacity went down 300lbs from the 3rd Gen (6800lbs max).

 

The lower towing rating might be the deal breaker for me. At this point I have a '20 Tundra to tow a 3400# two-horse trailer, so loaded is about 5400#. That means a Taco buffer of about 1000# give or take, minus tack etc. We don't tow a lot, and when we do it's maybe 10 miles round trip, so the majority of my use is commuting, camping, hunting etc., so would really like a smaller rig. Who has towed something similar with the 3rd Gen?

 

I think the slight reduction in max tow capacity is more than made up for by the extra payload capacity.

 

Perhaps Toyota has data that most Tacoma owners hang just about everything out of an aftermarket parts catalog on their trucks rather than tow?

Betcha this Braaah is way over payload…

 

To be fair that's not hard to do when that truck has a payload rating comparable to a Camry.

 

Oh it is terrible. Glad to see the improvement, my 1G is 1600 lbs, my 3G is 1100.

I push the payload when loaded for camping/moto trips with a trailer, and the only thing I put on it is a fiberglass topper.

 

I would never even want to tow near capacity of any Tacoma. I multiply the tow capacity by .75 and that is a good upper limit, maybe even less than that. If you are just going across town, not a big deal. But as someone who lives in Wyoming at 7200 feet and tows at elevations well above that, towing near capacity sucks. It begins to feel unsafe, other cars are flying past you on the highway, your suspension does a Carolina Squat, etc. If you absolutely need a mid size truck with a high tow capacity I would check out the new Canyon/Colorado. GM and Ford are more than happy to be a little extra liberal with their tow numbers for the sake of advertising though.

 

I don’t know why would anyone buy a Tacoma to tow near its capacity. I
Wouldn’t tow more than 4500#, and that’s like once/twice a year type thing.

 

I agree, would not want to tow over 5000 with any mid-size truck.

 

Dual horse trailer with one horse on level terrain, electric brakes, no issues at all.
Estimate weight at 5000.
Did it with a 2nd gen, and 3rd gen actually does it better.
Sea level not at 2.5 miles above like other posters have commented on lol.

 

SAE J2807 tow standards were created for a reason, to inform buyers what the truck will tow, period.
If the manufacturer says it will do 6800, it will do it.

Always buy twice what you need…

Originally I was going to get the 4 banger, 3500 lbs tow capacity. Would have done what I needed it to do, max I am around 2500-3000 lbs. depending how much crap I have stuffed there, would have worked “ok”. V6, can’t even tell it is back there.

 

Its those sh*tty rear leafs. If most people upgraded and didn't care about illegally overloading their truck they'd be fine.

 

While I think that the tow rating going down a bit is definitely a bit annoying, I think it has more to do with the chassis and weight than the engine's output. In fact, I would posit that with the turbo, you'll find towing to be a much more enjoyable experience with the new truck, especially at higher elevations. The increased output due to applied load on the engine with a turbocharged engine is great for towing.

Basically, even with a lower capacity, I think the new truck will still be much happier towing 6500 lbs than the V6 was.

What a truck “will do” and what are comfortable are often very far apart

 

This new engine is going to boosting a lot and making a lot of heat. Imagine towing 6500lbs up a long highway with the engine barely turning 1700rpms.
