    My 09 rear brake started leaking and it was bad enough to completely soak my rear shoes so I ordered a new cylinder and a new shoe kit. The new cylinder is 7/8 and the old one is 15/16. So did the last shop years ago put the wrong part on or did I get sent the wrong new part? Will it make a difference if I use it?

    I’m not sure what you are talking about?
    What are measuring?

    The rear brake cylinder measurement stamp on the cylinder. The old part doesn’t have a brand name but it has 15/16 stamped on it. The new part is an ac delco part and has 7/8 stamped on it. So the new part is 1/16 smaller diameter than the old part. I’m asking if the 1/16 diameter is going to matter.

    Thanks for that, didn’t think to look up rockauto. The new part I have is for the 5 lug, just ordered the right ones. Makes me wonder though, why do the 5 lugs have a different part than the 6 lugs? And what would happen if you used the one instead of the other? They are identical other than the diameter, the 5 lug one fits exactly

    P=F/A --> F=P*A

    In theory smaller cylinder (Area) will yield less force for the same brake system pressure

    Just type in your VIN get the original. The original is cheap. Then you will know you have the right now.

    As the shoes wear, the self adjusters are supposed to self adjust out to compensate, but they don’t work very good. You have to manually adjust them. Not doing it could eventually cause the wheel cylinder pistons to pop out.

    Since your drums will be off, and you’ll be putting in new shoes, it’s a good opportunity to see how to tighten and loosen the adjuster. Before the drums go back on, pull the rubber plug, stick your adjuster tool in and look. Now you can see it turns this way to tighten. Now look to see how to loosen, a tiny screwdriver or whatever to push the little arm off the star, and the adjuster tool to loosen. Now just follow the correct adjustment procedure.

    See post #9.

    Make sure you ordered the correct shoes also.

    I replaced the drums and shoes and bled the brakes and now the pedal feels reallly soft and my parking brake is completely useless. I had a helper for the bleeding part and didn’t have the key in the ignition while I was doing it. I bled all 4 wheels in the correct order. The brake pedal feels a little better when I press it 2 or 3 times while stopping. Do you think I still have air in the system? Or did I not adjust the shoes tight enough? I know the parking brake needs adjustment but I was surprised how loose it is now, I assumed it would be tighter with new shoes.

    Probably not adjusted tight enough, did the parking brake work before?

    No, I kept it full. Just went and readjusted it all, I'm pretty sure it was just too loose because my drums both came off easily. Haven't driven yet but hopefully it works better now

    Best way to adjust shoes is through the backing plate with the wheel on
