2TR-FE Performance Thread

Makes sense to me, and sounds like a good option for those who want AWD but don’t want to fool with trying to make the FJ VF4B work behind an auto trans or 5 speed manual. Thanks for all the info

Anyone here interested in a new 2TR performance clutch? When I was reading & researching “Clutch’s” this one seemed like one of the better options. I really didn’t find a lot of complaints about it like some others but honestly I really and truly don’t know. Being I pulled the supercharged 2TR from the 07 I no longer have a need for it. I cut open the box to inspect it when I first got it. Then place it up on the shelf for safe keeping. I got a call from LCE, they said they heard I pulled the supercharger and said they wished I didn’t do that. I then reminded them it was my truck and I paid for the supercharger. They then said are interested in the supercharger and they would install it in the 05 if they could video the installation. I told them as long as it can turned to run on regular/87 I will keep it. But I’m sick and tired of the Phoenix area gas stations GOUGING premium customers!! Phoenix area was the cheapest place in the state to purchase gas years ago now you have to drive out of the area to purchase gas for less. I absolutely don’t need or really want a supercharged 5 lug for my daily. I don’t need or want it plus the LS powered Taco will be more than enough!
Now back to the clutch, when our new to us 05 needs a clutch it’s getting a factory clutch…

Going to burn this bad boy together tomorrow. T3 turbine flange. This is meant for an internally wastegated turbo setup. An external wastegate routing could be done, but that would need to be marked out by whomever wants that done. For those curious, this is for sale.

 

Got a nearly finished goodie for a customer. Just need to add some braces.

Does any make reduced gears for the 2ed gen Tacoma t-case that can just be swapped out? I know marlin crawler makes 4.7:1 but it looks like it's all ment to go into older cases

 

i'm stock and just running 93 octane has given me a pretty big boost in low RPM performance. no more stuttering and constant shifting. engine is significantly quieter/smoother as well. guess the dual VVTI can take advantage of the octane despite what some people claim. showing no more timing retard as well on my OBD reader.

it's almost undriveable 0n 87 after getting used to premium fuel. lots of timing retard, shuddering (when the shudder happens you can see the ECU pulling a lot of timing, i'm assuming to prevent knock), and constant shifting/gear hunting into lower gears to maintain torque.

almost feels like it was designed for 91 octane but then they threw some knock sensors on and said everyone could run 87. probably why so many people complain.

 

Interesting to hear evidence for the 10.2:1 compression design. I’ve tried 91 a few times and didn’t notice an obvious difference but I didn’t monitor timing. I may have to give this more thought. Did you notice a mpg difference?

 

It doesn’t seem URD offers a catless mid pipe anymore. Not surprised because the epa has been tightening their grip in recent years. Someone stole my cat recently so I make my own out of 2 1/4”. Straight piped exhaust was too loud for my liking. It had a obnoxious rasp at 2500 rpm and up. I added a

vibrant 1140 ultra quiet resonator that took care of the low end rasp. It still sounds a bit raspy at 4k still but is much better. I may have to add one more resonator to the mix.

 

it takes a long time for the ECU to adjust to higher octane. Even after 2 or 3 tanks it still was having trouble adjusting. I had to reset the learned values to get it to relearn everything before it really started driving better. the engine also sounds a lot better with full-throttle acceleration, smooth as butter.

i averaged around 19-20 mpg with 87. 21.5 with 89. and about 24 with 93. best tank i averaged around 26-28 mpg just cruising down flat 45 mph roads.

 

With a turbo in the exhaust, you'll be surprised at how much the exhaust gets tamed.

 

That's quite a good bump in MPG, after the ecu reset.
