I took delivery on a new '23 SR5 V6 DC last week. I asked the GM/F&I guy about DIY maintenance.. his reply was "proceed with caution" Now.. I have done all my own oil changes on my '10 4.0... 147,000 worth. Now you tell me to proceed with caution. So is the basic oil change so different from the 3.5 to the 4.0? I have every intention to use Mobil 1 in the '23...Is it a smoke screen or fact? TIA.

That was a douche reply, if your mechanically inclined you will able to perform the maintenance.

Follow the maintenance intervals in the manual. Keep good records.
There's nothing special about the 3rd gen.

Keep records and receipts do oil changes at least every 10k and they cannot void any warranty. I work at a dealer.

it is imperative you keep records!

He's trying to scare you into always taking your truck in for maintenance at the dealer. Oil changes are relatively strait forward on the 3rd gen 3.5. Yes it has a cartridge filter, but with the right removal tool it's easy as can be. MotivX makes a nice oil change kit with a housing removal tool and funnel that is really nice. Still takes the same drain plug and washer as the 2nd gen. Mobil 1 is a fine oil to use; it's actually what my dealer uses as a bulk oil on oil changes.

Thank you for the quick responses.... is 0w-20 the standard? hard to wrap my head around that coming from a 5w-30 truck... And I still believe in the first oil change at 1000 miles... they rolled their eyes at that one.

0W20 is an emission standard, it was paired with the new 10,000mi oil changes. It is always synthetic, there is no such thing as conventional 0W20.

Most here do 5,000-6,000 mile oil changes.

I'd suggest running 0W20 simply to prevent issues with warranty.

0w20 is what the truck is spec'd for. Most uses you will find that acceptable. Me personally I ran 5w30 synthetic in my other 3rd gen. However this will bring up tons on controversy. Haven't changed the oil in my current one yet.

Some still believe in very early oil changes. Is is required? Ehh, IMO, no. But, do what you feel like. It's not going to hurt anything. 5K will probably be a safe bet. Changed the oil in my old 2021 at 4500 miles and am about to come up on that one my 2022. You will have some metal flakes in your oil filter the first change, but don't be alarmed.

Alrighty, looks like Mobil 1 after 1000 miles. So is 0w-20 ok for 100+ degree Texas weather?

The biggest difference is you will need a tool to remove the oil filter cartridge and the oil change will take a little more time than the 4.0.

If it were me. Change oil at 1000 then 5k or every 6 months thereafter.
It’s your truck do as you please. You can download the Toyota app and add maintenance there so it’s documented on their system. I had the dealer do free oil changes and after that just added to the Toyota app. Oil Mobil one is fine. Be sure you get oem filters from the dealer. There are way to many knock offs that even say Toyota on the box but if you look closely it isn’t oem, that and spark plugs , there are several YouTube showing this to be true, I just go to the dealer for a few more $$. But you have the receipt to add to documentation. Enjoy.
