I have a 2014 Sport with 35,000 miles on it and OEM tires, needless to say tires are going to be replaced because of age. According to Toyota the sensors go into a sleep mode when stationary after a period of time. They also say the battery life of 6-10+ years for a vehicle under normal vehicle use. My question is those that have low mileage 2nd gens how many years did your sensors last? I can order the Denso sensors for about $130 (4) and have them installed when the tires are installed at Sams.

I have about 78k on my 14 and mine original ones are still going so far, I'll probably get them replaced next time I need tires.

I've seen 07's with TPMS that work fine.

I feel like TPMS is reactive, not pro-active maintenance.

I had my 2008 Taco for 11 years and 110k miles. Sensors still worked fine when I traded for my 4Runner.

Thanks everyone, I think I will let them run awhile longer. Don't mind spending the $, but would rather spend it elsewhere.

Theyre battery powered...miles do not matter. Age is what kills them. But, if one goes bad once you have new tires, no biggie...just drive with a caution light on knowing what it is! Ive never heard of "sleep mode" but now Im off to look it up!!

quick google and sure as shit, they do go into sleep mode...I retract my previous statement about age!

Changed all of them last November. Didn't had a TPMS light but when i bought new winter tyre i didn't know if the TPMS was replaced (They was on the factory wheel set) so i bought a new set for a fresh start, when scanning each one indicated a low battery warning so i was not far off with my idea, don't know how many juice was left inside but they was OEM and the date code was at the end of 2011.

The truck had near 145k miles on the odo and was first bought in June 2012. I assume since they where on the winter tyre set that these sensor worked maybe half a year in cold to freezing condition.

Now i have 2 set of different tpms brand (because supply missing) and so far the summer set is 2 year old and no problem. The winter set got maybe 2200 miles still new time will tell.

I was surprised when I read that also, that may make them last a longer, but how much longer that is the question. It's A shame with all the info that obd2 / ecu captures it can't give you tpms battery levels.

09 model so at 11 years I replaced at 160k miles.
New ones from Discount are warranted and in rock fields I have damaged several of the valve ends (caps and ends get mashed) and the end outside the tire is individually replaceable from the body inside, so they did no issues. Just letting you and others know.
Who has a link to that "sleep condition" as not sure I buy that as they transmit to an in-cab receiver. Denso site did not mention.

I don't think it is miles as much as time. The sensors on my 2007 were still working after 14 years when I replaced them in 2021. I've seen other factory sensors die between 7-9 years old. I was getting new tires and ordered new sensors from Amazon before taking the truck to the tire shop. I was pretty sure the sensors wouldn't out last another set of tires.

I've replaced sensors proactively in 2 other vehicles with sensors I bought from Amazon, all installed and programed with no issues. And after 2-5 years they are all working. Cost works out to about $15-$20 each and any tire store will install them at no cost if you're buying new tires anyway.

If you wait until they die and have them installed without buying tires cost is $10-$15 per tire for instillation. With sensors that cheap I would'n't wait until they go bad.

The only negative was that I needed a 5th one for my spare which increased the cost some. Plus my spare was 14 years old and Discount tire wouldn't touch it. I found a 5 year old used take-off from another tire store for $30 mounted to use as my new spare.

With a nearly 10 year old truck I'd proactively replace them with new tires. Tacoma sensors seem to last longer than the typical 7-10 years, but chances are good your factory sensors won't outlast new tires.

My 2012 has original sensors as well with no problems yet. I'm amazed at how long the batteries last. Plus as Marshal R points out, I have a brand new spare, never used, that I'm sure Discount would never touch either.

Funny side note: I just replaced 30 year old BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on one of my old cars that doesn't get driven very much, but will be now. The outside of the tires were drying out and looking ashen gray, but when the shop removed then from the rims, I was amazed that the insides look brand new still! They were so old, they didn't have dates on the side of the tires.
