Well, looks like the draw of the SR double cab 4x4 is gone. Yes I mean SR not talking SR5. Bummer. I’ve had two SRs and they were the deal of all trim levels IMO as long as you didn’t really need the locker. The vast majority of people rolling around the suburbs don’t ever use their locker. They get a TRD OR or other higher trim, pay more for what then boils down to different wheels, tires and shocks then a month later remove all those items and pay more again for aftermarket wheels, tires and a lift.

The old SR had the same parts where it mattered, engine, tranny, etc. making it a great deal of the trim levels if you planned on some upgrades no matter what. Sure, the head unit was 1” smaller and no backup sensors or BSM but….. there’s mirrors. Haha!

Now the new SR won’t be the deal that it once was with less power and even more of a negative, doesn’t get the rear coil springs. I’d go SR5 at a minimum now. Ford is doing the same with the Ranger, putting more separation between trim levels to really incentivize moving up. I’ll miss the $34k truck that had all the same stuff where it mattered as the $40k truck.

What do you mean? Official site lists it as available, no further info whether its 4x2 or 4x4 but it shows a SR DC available.

Is that a typo? thought they dropped SR output a lot lower. Most sites report 228 HP.

270/310 vs 278/317 is pretty negligible.

Might be the DC gets the upgraded tune, and the Xtra Cab gets detuned.

I just snipped that from Toyotas website, so I’m hoping they know what they’re posting?

I think the 270/310 is for all trim levels with MT.

yeah looking into it more seems to be the case. So prob Toyota typo.

MT peaks at 5400 rpm per above chart, 600 less than the automatic so maybe a MT transmission limitation. I also recall there being picture of two tach gauges with different redlines.

I thought I read somewhere that it has a warmup rev limiter (I can't find the post about it unfortunately). I had a Triumph motorcycle with a similar redline that as the engine warmed the redline would increase.

If the SR double cab 4x4 gets the 270 or 278 HP that would be great. It looks like maybe it will get the leaf spring rear end. That would be a bummer and might be enough to make me go for the SR5. In the past, the SR was great for those that didn't need the locker and planned on upgrading wheels, tires and suspension right away. The extra cost for any other trim level just wasn't worth it for me. The only thing missing from my current SR that would be nice is perhaps the BSM feature. That's it. I can't even utilize backup sensors because I have a flip up bike rack in the way. Don't want a sunroof as it takes up too much headroom.

It sounds like the SR Manual will get 270 and the aforementioned 228 in the AT.

That actually pretty damn cool. Are you saying the redline on the digital tach increases as the motor reaches ideal temp?

The SR automatic will have 228 hp, the SR manual will have 270 hp.

Regarding the rear springs, I don't always trust Toyota's marketing folks to get the info completely correct when it comes to press release information. I'm reading into it a bit, but I suspect the XtraCab may end up with leafs and the Double Cab with coil springs, even on the SR. If that's not the case, I don't know why the SR5 XtraCab and TRD PreRunner are getting the leafs when other SR5 models get the coil springs.

I thought I saw something somewhere that made me second guess this suspicion, but I can't find it now, so I'm just saying it anyway.

All I'm saying is there's a small chance the SR Double Cab may actually have coil springs. Regarding the lower power, if it's like other Toyota engines that are detuned (2GR-FSE, 2GR-FKS, and V35A-FTS for example), the engine and driveline are the same for all models, the only difference is the ECU tune. So retune or buy a new ECU from an SR5 and you'll get your extra 50 hp.

I feel you bro. I was considering holding out for a double cab 4x4 SR as a family hauler and keeping my 3rd gen SR for solo missions. Once I saw the trim differences I just picked up a crossover.

The age of the 30k 4x4 pickup are almost over. Frontier maybe?

As somebody who will only consider manual options, my #1 trim as of now is the SR. You get same amount of power as other manual trims and this time around looks like you don’t have to get fugly black plastic bumpers and such on the SR - pick up a cheap set of brand new TRD wheels on Facebook market once everyone starts pulling theirs off for the dumb aftermarket stuff. We’ll see what the actual price difference between the base-optioned TRD OR and manual SR ends up being, but if it’s $5k or more I’d prob get the SR. My guess is that the price gap will only be like $3,000-$3,500 though so most of us will just get the TRD OR at that point.

*edit - sport trim I guess would be cheapest comparison to SR manual 4x4, but ya boi don’t roll w/ fake hood scoops lol
