jbl system is a proprietary digital interlink between the head unit and oem amplifier. replacing one or the other requires additional solutions to either create or decode that digital signal so the new gear can talk to the old gear.

that's why it's easier to just gut the system and install all new stuff.

    i hope you mean toyota.

the 'jbl audio system' in this case is really just a specification standard. it's highly likely that no one from jbl was even involved in the trucks audio system implementation.

    https://www.theautopian.com/the-open-secret-behind-most-premium-car-audio-systems/

it's just a fancy sticker, meant to instill confidence and carry some brand recognition for the end user. don't ever put your faith in stickers. it's exactly how my old ranger got to be re-branded as an Alfa Romeo SRT Z71 TRD Edition.

I learned something. I knew Harmon owned all those brands. And I knew Samsung owned AKG. Was not aware that Samsung owned them all.

Pretty sure your experience was what prompted me to buy mine. Well, at least the non-Excelon version. I've never been more pleased with a headunit.

Thanks for linking your thread I just read through it. So the only difference between the DNX-1007XR and the DMX-1057XR is the built in Garmin GPS correct? For $300 more? Or am I missing some other features?

Also - do you know if SiriusXM shows album art when playing? My current JBL’s SiriusXM interface is garbage.

I’ve been looking at the Stinger Heigh10 pretty seriously, I really love the flush look. I watched a video last night on the Stinger and there is some concern from me about the preamp voltage and some distortion issues. I feel like the Kenwoods are probably better sounding units audio-wise as they have a proven track record over the years and I’ve owned others that rocked out.

I’m still not 100% sold on the floating style HU, however. Isn’t there a big gap behind the screen and dash that could fill up with dust and dead bugs and stuff lol? Also since it sticks out between the two middle air vents does it interfere with the airflow from the right vent towards the drivers side? (If that makes sense)

And one last thing: Are any of the native Tacoma functions lost with this unit? Like will the radio info still show on the drivers screen, etc?

** edit - will using the idatalink Maestro module allow the HU use my OEM JBL speakers, sub, and amp without any special modifications? It should be plug and play right? I’m happy with the speaker system I currently have in the truck

I can't answer all of this but I can say for sure the radio info will populate on the cluster screen for song playing. Maestro keeps that working. The compass tab will not work, but mine never had anything from the factory there anyways so I didn't care.

One of the main purposes of the Maestro is to adapt factory amps and all that type of stuff, so you should have no issues. The Maestro should keep the amp working which should in turn keep the speakers working. iDataLink gives you different wiring diagrams for w/ or w/o JBL.

not too sure on the Sirius XM. But since populates with the station icons I’m guessing it does. But don’t quote me on it since I haven’t actually hooked up a satellite tuner to any of my rides.

5V Preout is awesome. But the Heigh10 does do optical I think. I have a 22 with JBL now and I’m still probably going to swap.

The gap is big, but it’s not really noticeable in any place you would look. Like you have to be up against the dash to notice it. It doesn’t really effect flow since those vents normally aim to the seats direct or straight up in the air.

The main point of the Maestro is to be able to keep the OEM settings. You can still mess with locks, lights etc. but it will be a tad cumbersome compared factory HU.

As for the display on Speedo. I think you do lose the direction arrows, but music still shows up. Let’s say it doesn’t look weird with whatever was removed in the audio tab.

yes still works with JBL. Make sure you get the right Toyota harness and flash right!

Those Kenwood's do show album art on SiriusXM.

I installed a cheap-ish Sony for my commuter car and I was irked that it doesn't show it. I had an equivalent Kenwood in another vehicle and it did.

For the dash display what folks are saying here is correct. You lose the navigation portion of the display o
If you came equipped with it.

It sounds like we're not doing a very good job at not convincing you to not upgrade.

My last piece of advice is please make sure you get it from a reputable/licensed dealer. If you're able to walk/drive into a local joint they will be super hyped to help you out. If you choose to install yourself, This is legit one of the easiest vehicles to radio swap!

    Good luck! post pics!

    Nice. Thanks for the info

I have a SiriusXM subscription, and my last vehicle i traded in for the Tacoma had a nice interface with the album art. So i was bummed when my JBL didnt. This Tacoma i bought literally has every option i wanted. Sunroof, leather, the works. But man why they gotta skimp out on the audio haha. Minus that i havent been this excited and satisfied with a vehicle purchase since I bought my Wranger back in 2014 (which i still have and love). The JBL i have in the truck has OEM GPS but I dont use it. The google maps on CarPlay gets me where i need to go. I will say when I got out of the Navy in 2017 I drove from Bremerton, WA to Kentucky, and stopped in Wyoming along the way to visit Yellowstone. Had i not had my el cheapo garmin GPS that suction-cupped to the window I would have had to resort to pulling out the old Rand McNally map to find my way through the backroads Wyoming as I didnt have cell signal and my CarPlay maps wouldnt work. So it would be nice to retain that functionality, but not necessary.

And no you guys sure arent doing a good job of talking me out of it haha. The one thing stopping me from pulling the trigger right now is that Crutchfield's Maestro RR2's are on backorder.

Oh wow. That's been going on for a while. I tried to get one in December and they were backordered. Realized I didn't need the RR2, so just got the other one.

    Noooo! You need the RR2.

My vehicle is older and doesn't have many doo-dads.
