Holding the brake at a red light

Hello! I bought a 2023 TRD OR about a month ago. Love it so far. Drove a first gen for the past 5 years but sold it to my dad to keep it in the family.

Anyway I may still be getting used to the new truck, but I’ve noticed that when I stop at red lights I find myself inching forward on accident. Like I need to press down on the brakes pretty firmly to stay stationary. Anyone else experience this? Or is it user error?

Thanks in advance! Here’s a pic of the new ride!

    Nice…

    Could be “Taco Creep”..

Shut your Heater/AC down, including fan, and drive it.

Close cousin to the “Taco Bump”..

    4 run, 2 don't
It's because they have so much power :muscleflexing:

Have to do the same with my Vette.

Thanks for the reply. I have the Heater/AC and fan off so it’s not that. I do remember that on my first gen, if the AC was on, it did tend to cause it to creep forward when stationary.

In the case for my third gen, I do feel like it just has too much power in drive. Guess I’ll just have to get used to it. I could see myself accidentally bumping into the car in front of me if I am not attentive.

They have some weird software programming. Certain conditions for inj cleaning, startup, warm restart, idle will be higher than what you think it should be.. I’m sure what you are feeling is normal. Enjoy your truck..

Yep, you’re not alone. This has happened to me also. It seems to me that you have to apply more pressure to the brake pedal in these trucks than in other vehicles I drive/have driven. Not a complaint at all, just something I’ve noticed.

My wife actually yelled at me once because we were creeping forward at a red light and I didn’t even notice it lol

Yup it’s definitely noticeable compared to other cars I’ve driven. Glad to see I’m not the only one.

I had the exact same thing happen with my girlfriend in the car. Other times I’ve sat there wondering why the car next to me is reversing LOL

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
Was the same on my 15 right after I got it, but now it's not even noticeable. Just have to get past the old muscle memory.

Many times with long waits/long lines I will put it in park especially, with the AC on.

I've noticed some "speed up" while braking in reverse, backing into my garage on occasion, but never going forward. I thought that also was kinda weird, but it does happen.

I had a 2006 AC I bought with 20k miles from the Dealer. It always felt like it was too strong in idle at lights, always took extra force to keep it stationary at traffic stop lights. Then many months later came time to service my transmission fluid, I performed the drain and fill as usual as I've always done. I found that the transmission case was overfilled, from the dealer, by at least one quart. Once I completed the drain and fill, to the proper level per the dipstick at the proper temperature, I proceeded with the test drive. RPM's were down to normal levels at stop lights! I couldn't believe it.

Disc/Disc and Disc/Drum brakes are not biased the same. While both are biased toward the front, vehicles with rear drums are more biased toward the from. Which means while you are at a stop there is less clamping force on the rear brakes (your drive wheels), and is the reason you need more pedal pressure to remain stopped than you do with disc/disc brakes.

The ORs with electric brake boost have very grabby brakes. Either on or off sorta thing. Not like the other Tacoma trims or 2nd gens that use the more standard braking setup, which has a much better feel and feedback. This is not a drum brake thing.

I'll start out by saying I don't know what the front to rear brake bias is in our trucks and if drum versus discs even concerns it. Either way, brake bias comes into play when we're talking about extreme braking where weight transfer joins the party and you're trying to slow down from speed.

Even if you had 100% brake bias towards to the front and no brakes at the rear, all 4 tires are evenly on the ground and it doesn't matter if it's a FWD, RWD or AWD vehicle. The vehicle is static and in order for the rear axle to move the front will have to as well.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I know the feeling. When I got mine three years ago, damn near rolled into someone because I thought I was fully stopped. Coming from a lighter sedan with different brake feel and brakes on the taco being pretty grabby until the very end is something to definitely get used to. Definitely takes some practice.

Mine only truly surges cold and turning steering wheel while backing out. Really have to be on the brakes coming out of my garage so I don't remove the front bumper simply by turning the wheel.
