Starter sounds like it’s staying engaged after startup and grinding

    My 2005 pre runner v6 AT sounds like when it starts the starter stays engaged a bit and is making a grinding noise. The truck has 230k miles and it looks like the original starter. Video of startup and noise here: https://youtube.com/shorts/Smh7JRegAoc?feature=share

    Hmm never heard that before. I'd be tempted to remove it and bench test it.

    Is the truck auto? A cracked ring gear has an odd sound to it and is worth inspecting as well (if auto)

    It's so brief in the video it's hard to tell but yes I have seen the return springs on starters break before and the bendix will either stay engaged for a bit or intermittently touch the ring gear while the engine is running.

    replacing starter wouldn’t hurt anyways given it’s age so i think i’ll do that

    Yes the return spring can break. Get it out of there before the flywheel gets damaged
