I agree, and I especially love the flare side trim level on these. I know many will disagree, love ‘em or hate ‘em type thing, but I was digging them from the first time I saw one back in 2005 I think, and still do!

Just a way to access the bed without opening the tail gate, also adds an aesthetic look, some like myself appreciate.

I suppose that makes a small amount of sense on a full sized truck that's taller.

It’s mostly a cosmetic thing nowadays, which I’ve always liked but back in the day it was much more of a functional modification with the step being inches from your foot as opposed to feet like shown above on the taco and tundy.

Never cared for these step-sides myself. Seems that the only reason someone would want a step-side is because they think it looks better. I personally don't like the look and find it easy enough to use the top of the tire as a step to reach into the bed and even to get into the bed. I find it easier to step onto the tire and pull myself up and over the bedside than it is to get in through the tailgate. With the loss in bed space and the aesthetics of a step-side, I just don't get it. It looks good on older trucks; I'm thinking pre-80s, but not any Toyota I've ever seen.
