23 years old and just made my first adult purchase. I've been reading people saying that while the drivetrain is indestructible, the rest of the build quality is sub-par. How true is this? Seems to be pretty well made to me so far.

Welcome and enjoy. The most popular Tacoma and mid sized truck ever. Great re-sale values. Over 1.5-2 million on the road. Yes, small percentage with issues that are common on any massed produced vehicle. My 2020 is approaching 3 years old and is a stock daily driver, light off roader. Not one issue so far. only oil changes.

Best first Adult purchase so far. Let hope you are as wise when you pick a life partner!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

    Welcome aboard matey:wave:

You have a well engineered truck, nothing is indestructible but if you treat her right you will probably get 200,000 trouble free miles out of her and could push her much further pending you stay on top of routine maintenance. Enjoy your truck and you’ve come to the right place for all your maintenance and money pit modification type needs/wants.

As a first time Tacoma/Toyota owner coming from owning a long line of owning various vehicles from other manus including 6 Jeeps (the last being a Fiat product, a 2013 JKRU) I can tell you from my personal experience over the last year and a half, that is patently false.

Comparatively speaking, the overall build quality of my Tacoma while not perfect, is on par or better than any vehicle I've ever owned.
My 2020 DCLB is my 14th vehicle I've owned.

    Hello @SoCalEthan

Congrats on picking up your Tacoma, that is very exciting!

We appreciate the photo you shared with the group and we are loving the colorway you chose. Looks like a solid truck and we hope you are enjoying it so far!

    Congrats and nice looking rig.
    My 1st Tacoma was a 2001 that I bought in '03. I was also 23yrs old. Ha.
Ran that thing for 15 years until I traded it for my current 2016 that I bought in 2018.
Here we are 20 yrs later and I'm still driving Tacoma's.
    Enjoy!20160709_122620.jpg 20230607_155712.jpg

The biggest concern is rust with body on frame vehicles, our trucks. As AMD, a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician, who produces videos so owners will understand and be able to DIY maintain their vehicles has pointed out that Toyota cars with unibody construction are well protected, but the body on frame trucks need rustproofing treatment periodically. Other than that problem that affects every body on frame truck, no worries, just read and follow the book the engineers wrote. Welcome to TW!
