    We had to get it charged in 2001, 2002, and 2003! My parents traded it for a new 2004 Honda Odyssey EX in May 2004 without getting the A/C charged that year, and the A/C in the Odyssey never had to be serviced during the nine years we owned it. Anyway, the air-conditioner in the Safari was always rather lackluster even when it was working, and the leak was no doubt caused by defective workmanship on the part of the company that did the conversion. The front A/C worked fine when charged, but rather than a legit rear A/C system, the van had a "rear fan" with vents in the ceiling that was tapped into the front A/C. In the summer of 2000 before moving across the country, my grandma (dad's mom) let my mom's side of the family have a family reunion at her two lakefront homes in Maine. The van was brand new with less than 3,000 miles, and my mom had several relatives in the backseat who were complaining that the A/C wasn't working very well, so my mom had to freeze herself out with the front A/C in order to cool down the whole van (kind of like a large 2-story home with only one central air-conditioner, which I also have plenty of unpleasant experiences with). I had little knowledge of HVAC prior to 2005, and it was well past 2010 when I learned that virtually all vehicles newer than 1993 used R134a). In 2000-2001, I blamed the lackluster performance and constant leaking of the Safari's A/C system on the "new" R134a refrigerant and assumed that our 1996 Nissan Pathfinder had R-12; I believe it was in the summer of 2003 when the A/C in the Pathfinder stopped blowing cold and to be serviced for the first time that I learned it had R134a...

    My parents hold onto vehicles long enough that 1996 the Pathfinder was our first vehicle with...

    • R134a air-conditioning (the 1993 Blazer we traded for the Pathy had R-12, the 1990 Camry we owned until 1998 had R-12, and the 1990 Mazda pickup that my dad bought as a commuter in 1998 also had R-12)!
    • Not only dual airbags, but any airbags period!
    • OBD2!
    • A CD player!

    @Empty_Lord

    Would a 1990 Toyota Camry (or any Toyota/Lexus vehicle older than about 1992-1993) have OBD1, or any type of computerized diagnostics system?

    Then a woman who lived on that street, who had previously seen the turtle and wanted to get it out of the road, came out with a snow shovel. She was only wearing flipflops, so I took the shovel and scooped the turtle onto the sidewalk, where he (or she...?) started heading towards the woods...

    You couldn't give those radios away, unless someone didn't have one at all..maybe..or needed to swap one back in to sell the vehicle. My folks had a 87 Grandy Ammie..very solid car.

    A woman only wearing flip flops with a snow shovel? Damn...

    So my mom's car would have a legit OBD port where a tech could have plugged in a scanner? Back then, were they brand specific or were there universal scanners?

    My Mustang actually has scanner capability, there is an oddball plug under the hood that will accept a specific type.

    If I were ever to get a Grand Am, it would be this style.

    Ford-specific scanner?

    So that's why OBD2 is better, because the scanner will work in anything from my Tacoma or a Hyundai up to a Rolls-Royce?

    Yep, I believe OBD1 was nowhere near as universal as OBD2.

    Yup. I forget the different ones but I want to say I recall at least 3 different types of scanners depending on the vehicle. My friend was a mechanic and had an expensive portable machine but I think it took a cartridge/card depending on the vehicle.

    Amanda I went to the huge antique truck show in Macungie today, and I took this picture with my phone at 10:50am, but reception was almost nonexistent in that area. Also, with the exception of 2020 due to COVID, I have gone to this show every year since 2014 and I have NEVER seen it this crowded; I normally park at the local fire station, but it was full, and I ended up parking at a house down the street for the same amount of money. I also took a nape when I got home at like 4pm, and that's why I'm just posting it now...
