My 1997 4runner sr5 3.4 4x4 is having a ignition switch or wiring issue. On my way to work I noticed a electrical burning smell. Thought it was the radio that I have had problems with so I go to cut it off it flips out, the power to the Guage cluster go out, no wipers, no lights, no windows, no side mirrors, the only thing I had button wise was flashers. It still run until I turned the key off. I jumped some of the connections but it would only get me lights on the dash, I also Tried a new ignition switch still nothing. Any ideas?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
How many miles did you drive in this condition ?

just what did you attempt to jump?

If you have no Battery voltage in the system and smelled burning wires .

Did you change the lock cylinder or the electrical switch behind the lock cylinder??

Break out the multi meter . Start with battery voltage.

Check out all the fuses .

Look for melted wires. loose connections that got hot

    Did the alternator Quit ??

As of now you have a no crank condition and a limited number of working circuits correct??

    Like 3 miles

I jumped pins on the ignition switch to power what the key turns would do

I grabbed a new ignition to test and still nothing. If I jump pins I can get the dash to light up with abs and all that jazz

All fuse in the boxes are good

Not 100% if the alternator quit and some how surged the system

Yes only the flashers and key chime work.... edit...dome lights work
