Came home from work and the AC is out. Anyone know if we have an HVAC connection on here?

Probably a long shot to diagnose in a truck forum, but maybe start with the basics. Is the air moving at all? Blowing hot? Is there power? Water in the drip pan? What have you already checked?

Indoor and outdoor fans kick on. Compressor doesn’t sound like it’s kicking on. I’m guessing low refrigerant, start/run cap, or compressor…

I looked at the capacitor and it doesn’t looks swollen or hot or leaking. I actually think it might have been replaced during my annual maintenance.

was just hoping to find someone to come out before the wife and kids get home this weekend.
We used to have a member here that did HVAC but I think he moved back to Thailand.

My guess is capacitor. If you have periodic maintenance, I would not think that low refrigerant would be the issue. And a capacitor can fail in the heat without exploding.

Caps are a $10-20 item if you DIY.

Remove cap and check farad reading. Keep a spare on hand, they usually only last 4-5 years tops

Tried replacing just the fan/herm cap but that didn't work. Turned out to be a hard start cap for the compressor.... Will be adding one of those to my spares box.

Might be a good idea to check the condenser to make sure it’s clean. Somethings making the compressor run hard but if it’s just old age things wear out eventually.

I have the units serviced twice a year, these units are 16 years old so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I'm shelling out 20K for 2 units.

Cap went out last week. 80/10 cap is impossible to find local and HVAC stores are no help for the common man. Amazon to the rescue but had to hotel it for a night. Budgeting for a new unit though mine is only 8 years old and does work well.
