i havent really dug deep into it but my mechanic said its the better ones if you dabble in this stuff. im not doing major work but its nice to have for basic stuff. below is where i got it

why are tool boxes so expensive?!? why don't they depreciate!?

it's looking like i'm buying a second brand-new 4-drawer HF tool cart at this point so i can hack it up to add another batch of shelves to create an '8 drawer' tool cart. 4 isn't enough, and the shelf below is absolutely useless for me.

been calling around to see if any local HF's have a scratched/damaged discounted unit, and watching facebook marketplace. but marketplace seems to all want about $5 off new prices for carts guy's have been using for years and wearing out the ball bearing slides.

now just playing the waiting game for whenever HF decides to put the new $230 price on sale...

You could search the government auctions, I picked up an old one a few years back for pretty cheap from a local county road mantainence shop.

i haven't had any luck with the online surplus stuff.

3 things always happen.
1. anything i need, apparently everyone else does as well. it ends up bid up to as-new prices.
2. the item can only be picked up at times/locations that require taking at least an entire day off work. this is a just plain a hassle, but currently changed jobs about a month ago(the reason for the tool cart to begin with), so still on 0 vacation probation for at least the next 2 months...
3. there is apparently no government in the midwest. the majority of all product listed is on either coast. california is a 4-day 1-way trip of solid driving, virginia is 1.5 days away.

 

Not a big thing but a little something to make life easier when wrenching. A suction cup with a metal plate to hold a magnetic worklight on all of those non steel surfaces that today's cars have. Should be particularly useful for interior work where there is nothing to stick a magnet to.

What table saw do you mechanic types like?

 

I have a Hitachi folding one. Been through some serious abuse, and still keeps on kicking!

Did a little research and found an updated version of mine. Obviously they're now Metabo, but same thing.

Mine doesn't have all that safety stuff as mine is from the early 2000's. If that's a little too pricey, we have a Skil at work we use for cutting plastic transition plates. Seems to do an OK job. Doesn't have the power of the Hitachi/Metabo though.

How sturdy is the stand? I hate the wobbly ones.

That said, I already have a stand. Free from the dump. hahahahaha

 

Not sure on the newer one, but the old one is adequate. I've set it up in the garage, out in the yard, etc. Never felt like it was going to tip over, even ripping somewhat wet treated lumber.

Pardon the mess, this was when I was working on enclosing my carport, so there was no organization at all

 

How wide/thick of wood are you cutting? Do you want one you can toss in the truck for a job or one thats stationary in the shop/garage? How fine of woodworking are you doing?

 

1-2" maybe a bit more. Not much sheet goods, more stick work, mostly like ripping 2x type work.
Do not foresee any need to throw in the Tacoma.
Not precision joinery, but better than fencing. Some nice fits, some medium dados.

 

as often as im using heat shrink tube on lighting projects and wiring, i want to grab one of these and the m18 heat gun.

 

Well since we are showing off tools... wife brought this home this weekend for Father's Day. A hammer drill and another impact gun. Have the "older" (gen 2) impact ( same PN but supposedly better in gen 3) but having 2 is always nice. And 2 more batteries is always a win at my house!

hammer drill option can be turned off, and even still rips though metal super-fast, and the hammer drill option blows though concrete block pretty quickly as well so should help me place anchors in my shop floor fairly quickly too!

 

have a MobArmor ( MobNetic Maxx (MobNetic Pro) Magnetic Car Mount | Mob Armor ) mount for stuff like this and a mount to fit my flashlight. also really nice with the magnetic mount on my cellphone had a few chats with friends while working on a car. or if i have music going in the shop its pretty awesome as well too!

 

Fuck, you just reminded me that I have one of these!

I was thinking of buying a light I can temporarily attach to my press brake; it's really dim (even with the lights on) when I try to see the lines I marked when I'm about to bend something.

 

That's about all that heat gun is good for. That and thawing frozen padlocks in the winter.
