A good spot to test is the connector under the left seat

That checks every thing on the cab side is working correct.

Check the blue wire - pin #9 for power when cranking.

just remember these trucks only energize the fuel pump circuit when cranking and when the engine is running

My 2000 the circuit opening relay is in the dash almost above the steering shaft

Battery was weak - put on charger - was ok but next trip out - truck just stopped - tried a jump- wouldn’t start - got it towed home and started to try and figure it out - put in new battery - cleaned the MAF sensor (which was the only code pulled) checked plugs - they are black but have a spark. So, it cranks, sometimes a brief sputter then dies. ‘97 2.4L. The 15 amp EFI fuse and EFI relay are both good. Haven’t worked on vehicles much since early 1970’s when everything was a lot simpler.

When you cleaned the MAF sensor did that clear your code??

    Curious just how many miles?

Has the fuel filter ever been changed ?

Yes. It might of popped the MAF code as I had unplugged the MAF at someone’s suggestion and tried to start engine. No codes now after cleaning with CRC MAF. cleaner and clearing codes. Truck has 175K. Bought it at 160K. No info on repairs/maintenance so unsure about fuel filter.

    Do you have spark?
Can you spray a bit of starting fluid in the intake and will it attempt to run?
Does the tach move when cranking?

    You have no tach?
    Or the tach doesn’t move?

Did you find the C/Open relay?
Do you have a scan tool?

I was hoping we could verify an RMP was present.
If you have no rpm signal, the fuel pump will not come on.

I guess we could diag the c/open circuit if you’re up for it?

Definitely sounds like a fuel problem if it runs on starting fluid, the easiest place to check for power going to the fuel pump is at connector BN1 under the seat.
Pin 9 (Blue) is power going to the pump and Pin 6 (White/Black) is ground to the pump, you should see battery voltage between those 2 wires while cranking.
