Sounds like an engineering school graduate designed a system for short term because of $money$ instead of using some knowledge to maybe spend a little more and make something that will hold up over the years. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you Steve .

 

Well, what I was going to do was give you sort a plane of the week, since I have been doing so many tours. Today, two of the best Docents were there - they didn't need me - so I took some tools to "my" R-2800! It is now officially a project!
But "That's All Brother" is home, and they have to do 3 weeks of planned maintenance in two weeks. Ray says I need to get drug tested, so that I can help. The C-47 is probably our biggest draw, but I like the B-25 (a lot) too!






So, up and down a ladder, with a 7/16", hammer, and a couple "chisels". Tap, tap, tap....open valves show everything from looking good, to organic growth, to all out aluminum growth! All the valve covers on top are now off, still have a couple on the "bottom" I can't get to on this stand. BUT, soon, it will be on another stand, and it will be moved into the AIR CONDITIONED Wood/Metal shop! As it's a project, looks like I also got a helper, but didn't know it.





Yup. It was hot. Legs turned to rubber about 2 PM.

 

Very happily on the receiving end of this wonderful break in the heat! It made it here! Almost an inch so far (won't have to water!), and winds to 40mph, booms, flashes, small hail.....

 

Beautiful day here to go for a drive, my old iron horse hadn't been out of the garage for 18 months and was running a little ragged at first. 154 miles, a can of Seafoam for her & an ice cream for me later she was running more like her old self.

So nice to drive something with no blind spots, the 60's style thin pillars give a panoramic view.

There are two of these, about six feet tall.



Found a market competitor along the way although this 67 Chevelle is a mid size like the Ford Fairlane, my old wagon is a full size based on the Galaxie.



He has dual exhaust, chrome wheels & gauges too, probably packing more heat under the hood than my stock 289.

We had a nice hand me down 66' 4Dr 390 (grampa, to dad, eventually to me). As a 10-ish year old, I got excited by how shiny I made those hubcaps with SOS pads. And, you can guess....
I stupidly traded it to some farmer years later for my 54' F-100 - straight up.

 

My uncle had a 66 Country Squire back in the day and I always thought it was a cool looking car, many years later I found this one, 50 years old with only 42,000 miles.
The Squire was the top of the line model, this is a base model Ranch Wagon.

I was hoping for a 390 and prepared to be underwhelmed by a 289 in a 4200 pound car but was surprised how zippy this old girl is.

It will easily move right out from a stop and contentedly fly down the highway at 70 although I don't drive that fast usually. Fairly thrifty on fuel too, about 18 mpg cruising on secondary roads at 55-60.

 

A two barrel?

 

Yep, 289 with 2 barrel. The 289 - 4B was never an option for the full size cars.

Dual exhaust wasn't available on the wagon with any engine, not even the 428.

Overcast and drizzly again today...Friday and Saturday look maybe not as drizzly.
We decided yesterday our Copper River dipnetting trip is postponed 'til later in July.
Whiskey Gulch halibut fishing is on for 4-7 July.
Today, do some more boat prep stuff and give the old Grizzly ATV some TLC oil change and grease. Think I'm gonna buy a new weedeater trimmer. My old one isn't auto feeding right ... fiddled with it some, but I think center shaft is worn to the point the line spool won't "float" right to feed line. 10+ yrs old, I reckon I'm due. Hand feeding line a dozen times or more a session is just frustrating.

Morning all:

Don't know how the auto feed spool is set up on your string trimmer, but the Homelite that I had worked on centrifugal force to feed the line, could be just something wrong with the string head. When I bought the Stihl I wanted an auto feed spool and the guy couldn't get it to work properly brand new out of the pack, so I ended up with the bump head that they come with and I'm happy with. I also had a Poulan Pro with a bump head, hated that thing, all you had to do was touch something and it fed string, probably used 10X the string that I should have, don't have that problem with the Stihl. I have often had to remove heads due to the string binding inside, once that happens none of the spools will let the string advance, that usually happens when I'm trimming where there is new growth heavier stuff such as new briar growth or small tree shoots.

This is a cheap Black and Decker light duty model. I've got my $40 outta it. I'm gonna buy a new one, slighly heavier with battery compatible with my leaf blower and snowblower. Our yard isn't so big, it'll likely be the last one I need to buy. I can hang onto the batteries for the old one as they are compatible with my little cordless sawzall I pack in my hunting field dressing kit.

 

You guys are too techy for me... I've never owned a string trimmer and probably never will. All the complaints I hear from people about the money they spend and the resulting problems they have, have kept me from throwing myself into that black hole. I have a nice little sickle that works well for the small stuff and the rest is designed to not need manicuring.

 

Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Wow! An actual storm last night. Winds to 40 mph, tree branches down around the block, 1.25" of rain, only a little small hail at the start. No damage here, except the front yard is covered in Crepe Myrtle snow. Pool is a mess. Thunder and lighting again at the moment - mowing may just wait.

Took me a few days to read the 13 pages that were posted since I went on vacation. Lots of interesting conversations and a whole lot of great car pics. My favorite was the 66 yellow Vette posted by @Oldie2007 .

@boatswain here are some fishing pics from Lake Huron. My wife and son were not feeling well so it was just my SIL and myself on the fishing trip. We caught the limit on Lake Trout and had to throw one back. We also hooked a Steelhead Trout and a Koho Salmon. There was a restaurant at the marina that would cook up your catch, so we had the First Mate filet one of the Lake Trout for lunch. We had the fish prepared 3 ways, fried, blackened and grilled. On the plate less than 2 hours after being caught is an amazing way to eat the fish. Trip was a little on the expensive side but we did catch a lot of fish and had a good time. Great to be back home.
