Hi all, looking at a 2015 Toyota tacoma access cab. No rust on the bottom and the car looks good. It’s $15k. Is this a bad idea? I am anxious but my experience w Toyotas is that the run and run for a long time. Just anxious about the high miles. Anyone have a lot of miles? I only drive to work one day a week it’s 30 miles round trip each week. Thanks so much for any help!

I don't personally have any experience with that high of miles, I've heard numerous accounts of trucks running well over that. There's a guy in NC that has a 4 cylinder Tacoma with 400k+ on the current engine as of a few years ago. He had 800k on the previous engine which had a head gasket blow. He opted for a new engine rather than fixing the old one. He was also at 400k before running into major running issues which turned out to be a result of him having never changed the spark plugs. A set of new plugs later and it was good as new.

The real question is: have you test driven it or taken it to a mechanic to have it looked over? 200k is a lot of miles for any vehicle, but certainly doesn't have to mean the vehicle is on its last leg.

    Is it 4x4?

I have about 280k on my '09. I just do regular maintenance. I drive it 5 days a week on a ~75 mile round trip to/from work.

Only you can answer the "is it worth it" question. Is it worth $15k to you?

Test drive it and have a mechanic look it over (even if you're familiar with vehicles, never hurts to get a 2nd set of eyes/opinion).

Do you know the truck? Has it been maintained? V6 automatic transmission? Has the coolant been changed? Other fluids?

It’s 4x4. It’s at a used car dealership, and I don’t know the dealership personally. It’s a v6 automatic. They claim it’ll run forever but I don’t trust anyone lol.

Id definitely take it someplace else and get it looked over. If it checks out, id try to get the price lower. Maybe like 10-12k

Do you know a reputable mechanic, if not, ask your friends, and if you’re really into it, take it in for a pre purchase inspection. Ask the dealer if there are any service records. If not you can bargain the price down, and tell them to stick that “it will run forever up their a$$,” seriously, be straight up with them, 209,000 miles is still 209,000 miles.
If you do the pre purchase inspection it will probably run you approximately $100, it’s worth it, make sure to take any of the service records with you that the dealer has.
And it’s good that you don’t trust anyone, especially used car dealers.

    Nothing runs forever. Nothing.
So ignore the sells guy. He is already pitching a sell by telling you that.

Which out knowing the maintenance history on the truck, it’s hard to give you a good opinion.
The 4.0 engine can run well into the 400,000+. But like I said, a lot of that will depend on maintenance.
The transmission is also good well passed 300k+. The 4WD system is pretty robust, but it too needs to be maintained and inspected regularly.

Maybe take the vin # and call your local Toyota dealership and see if they have any information on the previous maintenance. You could buy a carfax and see what their database says?
But I don’t put a lot of faith in their “previous accident” report.

That would be a little high for even a Double Cab 4X4 here. The Access Cab should be a little less. But market prices vary considerably in other parts of the country. Where you live that may be the going price.

All I can say is that my 07 has 237,000 trouble free miles and I'd be disappointed if I didn't get at least 300,000 before anything major needed to be replaced. There are lots of 2nd gens with 400,000-500,000 miles on them and a few over 1 million miles with the original engine and transmission.

If its the truck you really want and you are happy with that price I would have it checked over by a 3rd party. If they find nothing wrong I would not be worried about the mileage.

My 2010 has 306k and the only items that have been replaced are a few front wheel bearings, a couple u joints, front coils and a starter. I would drive it anywhere right now and if I had to sell it I would be hard pressed to let it go for anything less than 11K in my area KBB is 10,800 to 14,145.

Ask your bank or CU what they'd loan on it, even if you don't want a loan.

Ask your ins agent payout if it's totalled.

That's what it's really worth to you.
