Heartbreaking. May your family find at least some small comfort in having had teh chance to share your lives with a very very good dog.

image0 (2).jpg I just rescued this guy from a kill shelter in Arkansas. He's part Lab and part New Foundland........13 weeks and he's already 25 pounds . Probably the best behaved and smartest pup I've ever seen......loves children and people go bonkers when they see him.

I always get rescues, usually I pick the older dogs because they do make the best friends (it's so obvious how grateful they are!) but the rescue league had the whole litter of 7. I chose him because he was the biggest and when I walked up to him he did not jump, he sat right down and let me pet him. He does the same with children, no jumping he just sits!
He's going to be 100# or more.

We rescued a 10 year old black lab last November, we have a young daughter and baby on the way and wanted an older well mannered dog without crazy energy. Unfortunately though, even with a clean bill of health from our vet he ended up with bone cancer 3 weeks after we got him and had to be put down because the tumor completely cut off his intestines to where he couldn't go to the bathroom anymore. It was sad and I think it traumatized my wife into not wanting to do another senior dog, she got super attached to him really fast.

When we went to the rescue again a few months later we found our boy Dex, 3 year old Siberian Husky. He does have crazy energy from time to time but it's manageable lol.

That is so sad, but you gave that dog the love he so deserved in the short time you had him. Thank you for that.
Best of luck with the Husky, those are great family dogs. He will be the protector of your children. Where's the picture?!!

I don't know if I'd use the term protector when it comes to him, he's got more of a "what's mine is yours" mentality unless it's his food lol

But he is really good with kids and pretty chill overall. Extremely selective hearing but I read that Huskies have 18 muscles in their ears that they utilize specifically to ignore commands

One thing I've noticed with Dex lately is that he retches/dry heaves a lot after he runs around and drinks a good bit of water...like he might dry heave a half dozen times. I didn't think much of it figuring it was probably just him drinking too fast but after reading online it seems it might be something to get checked out. Any one else have that happen?

You think maybe he's drinking too fast? My last Lab would do that, she would actually choke sometimes she drank so fast after playing.

I find my dog often dry heaves or ever vomits after drinking or eating if she doesn’t rest before going to the bowls or goes right back to activity. She has constant access to food and water. This coupled with the activity/play drive she has and she won’t stop play to rest or eat and drink.

I would talk to the vet about this.

Yeah it only happens after we've been playing in the back yard, running around a lot then he gulps down water and then has a bout of dry heaves after.

Makes me think he's just drinking too much too fast combined with the blood pumping from exercise but I will still check with the vet about it, he was diagnosed with mild pancreatitis several weeks ago from eating stuff he wasn't supposed to (damn squirrels dropping avocados in our yard), which had him really lethargic, diarrhea, nauseous etc.

    Yeah.
Primitive dogs, LOL. I read a comment somewhere that you don't train a primitive dog, you come to a mutual understanding. Our Shibas have to be told to do something 3 times. The first time gets their attention, the 2nd time their understanding, and the 3rd time their consideration. If they don't obey that 3rd time, they've basically vetoed the command and you might as well give up and try something else. I've had Basenjis in the past, and they are even worse.

My brother and his family had a mini Australian Shepherd, that dog was the fastest dog I've ever seen run...even on just 3 legs after one of them had to be removed later in life.
