Other than $pesos$ and Mex car insurance, I don't see what would be different than a similar stateside trip. And, yes, I’ve been to Baja.

I see people carrying full sets of wrenches and sockets.
I only carry the sizes that are on my truck, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, etc.

I have a hammer, socket set, allen wrench set, screwdriver with assorted size bits, flashlights, knife, and gloves. I think I would like to add a Dremel to the mix though...

I carry the above all the time, but on more remote trips I carry an impact driver and extra tools for those CV axles.

I can fit a lot of very versatile tools in a small bag - sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, vise grips, safety wire, small multimeter, zip ties, silicone tape, wire cutters.

Good for more than just truck repair too.

Ratchet and sockets, tire repair kit, hex wrench kit, adjustable wrench, pliers, gas tank repair kit, zip ties, 1/4" bit driver kit, knife. That's pretty much it. No need to overpack.

Without spare parts, what really are you going to fix without fabrication tools and materials?

Things that rattle loose. Temporary fixes. Correcting mistakes.

That doesn’t sound like a sound strategy to me. I think it’s better to have a plan about what is likely to break and how you are going to fix it. For example, when bicycling it is very common to get a flat such that it is highly recommended that you carry a tube (spare part) and the tools and, very importantly, the skills necessary to replace the tube. Carrying random tools without the tube isn’t going to lead to a good ending.

That said, a knife, Vice Grips, baling wire, duct tape, and ratchet straps will get you out of a jam provided you have the payload capacity.
