New M6 owner - can I disable hill-start assist?

Hi everyone. New Tacoma owner and new to Tacomas in general. All my vehicles have been manuals, so when I found a '23 manual at my local dealer, I decided to jump on it.

I've noticed that when I'm starting from a stop on an uphill incline, when I take my foot off the brake, the truck does not roll backwards at all for a couple seconds. I'm guessing this is the "hill-start assist" described on page 324 of the manual. The manual says this feature operates automatically and does not specify any way to turn it off. Having driven manuals all my life, this feels very unnatural to me and I'd rather have it turned off. Does anyone know if there's a way to disable this feature?

    Thanks for any feedback.

No way to turn it off unfortunately. The manual indicates that it will shut off if the gas pedal is pressed, or the parking brake is engaged, so maybe lightly applying either could be a workaround. I've also read that gently applying the brakes (i.e. not fully depressed, but just enough to keep you from rolling backwards) can keep it from engaging.

Welcome to the forum :hattip:& congratulations on the new truck!

After you drive the truck for a while you probably won't notice it anymore. It can be kind of handy at times as well.

I have found you can "set" it by stepping firmly on the brake when stopped BTW.

I have always owned mostly manuals my whole life. I have the same feature on my M6 and I can say that I actually like it. Being stopped at an uphill light in rainy Seattle with bumper humpers sucking on my tail pipe made me glad I got it. If you buy a M6 off-road, it won't have that feature I believe.

Set it as in it would keep the breaks locked for longer than a few seconds? I think it only stays on for 2 or 3 seconds... Gah! Now I have to throw down my man card and go read the owners manual!

If you have been sitting for a few minutes with the hand brake applied when you release it the truck will roll freely.

If you step firmly on the service brakes it will set the hill holder, give it a try.

While I don't have it on my Tacoma (TRD-OR), I had it on my last car. It feels weird at first, but didn't take long to get used to it.

Thanks everyone. I figured as much, I'll have to get used to it. Not the end of the world.

Really liking the truck so far, aside from the ticking noise from the front driver side wheel. I'll start a separate thread on that if I can't figure it out soon. :)

EDIT: found the source of the ticking - loose center cap. Now to fix it. Doesn't feel like it's worth a trip to the dealer.

I've been driving my 2018 MT for five years now and I still would like to get rid of it. I've thought of maybe trying to remove or defeat the sensor that tells the truck it's on a hill, but I figure it's probably the same sensor that the VSC uses, in which case it's likely a no-go... (anyone know for sure?)

My assumption was that it doesn't care whether or not you're on a hill, it just keeps the brakes locked an extra few seconds after releasing the pedal or until enough throttle is applied. It's just more noticeable on a hill than on flat ground.

    Edit: I assumed wrong :notsure:

It uses rear ABS sensors. You can disconnect the sensor but will get all sorts of lights in your dash and lose TC, HSA and VSC.

Yes it cares if you are on a hill.

There are times when it’s almost flat but enough to start rolling backwards very slowly, HSA does not engage even after releasing the brakes.

Ah okay. I don't think it mattered on my last car, but of course it was a completely different manufacturer so probably a different system. Thanks for the education.

If you didn't want that feature you need to get an offroad or pro.

@6MTPro Yeah, in a perfect world, I would have bought an offroad. But since manual was my #1 requirement, my choices were severely limited. I even tried to custom order a manual offroad from the dealer, then got the "allocation, can't guarantee you will get it" answer. But the dealer had this sport on the lot, so I bit. I don't really care for the hood scoop, and don't love this hill-start assist, but at the end of the day, I got my manual so I can compromise on other things.

True there are compromises with the manual in other areas. It's interesting there are other differences between the manual trims too. I went two states over to get mine because manual was the priority for me as well.

You will get used to it over time.

On my tow rig, it's priceless to have this feature.

Believe me, the Off Road is what I wanted. Unfortunately some of us don't have that choice since Toyota does not offer a stickshift Access Cab Off Road (or Pro) here in the the US. :(

Yeah the access cab deal limits it even more for sure, that split was weird and to be honest based on sales if they had to split the US should have gotten the offroad and the sport Ac should have gone to Canada

Yeah, it seems (relatively) common to hear about users in the US wanting the AC Offroad 6MT, that's what I wanted initially. I ended up with the DCSB Offroad 6MT instead of the AC Sport 6MT, no regrets, but it's annoying that we didn't have the option.
