Does anyone know what the shim kit and anti-squeal hardware is used for and if I need to purchase that as well? I see they are listed in the parts section for front brake assemblies. P/N is 04945-35130. I don't want to get things taken apart and then realize I need these pieces but I'm not sure how to tell. Also, I will be installing aftermarket calipers, not sure if this makes a difference. Can anyone advise me on this? Thank you

For OEM pads, yes, you need the shims. For aftermarket pads probably not since most have them on there already. That said, I’d rather go with aftermarket rotors and pads, than calipers

Can you explain how to use the shims? How do I know if they need to be installed? I have never had to deal with shims on other brake jobs. Thank you

You have a shim clipped to the back of each brake pad. They are easily removed with a pocket screwdriver or knife. Picture from Rock Auto, the red arrows point to the shims:

Aftermarket pads come with shims. Toyota pads don't come with shims - you're expected to either transfer your existing shims to the new pads or buy them separately.

Toyota shims use the pins to hold in place, aftermarket shims hook onto the pads like @3JOH22A is showing.

Also for the heck of it

Ok that is now clear. Since my shims are original and probably rusted to no end, I will get new ones. So is this the same scenario with the anti squeal plates! Thank you very much.

I’ve got 184K miles and just put on my 3rd set. I’m using the original shims. I slid a thin flat putty knife between the old pad and shim. I scraped off the old CRC red anti-squeak and put new CRC on. Working perfect with no squeaks for well over 100K miles. The shims have zero rust and I live where they salt the roads.

I guess a little too far away I got a brand new set of powerstop rotors, drilled and slotted, and brand new pads. I would’ve sold them to you for 100 bucks.
