I got crickets in the Southwest region thread and I know we all don't mind driving long distances to hit some dirt ... so thanks in advance :)

I'm headed up to Abiquiu for a week with the family (from Austin, TX). Truck will be packed with mtn bikes, golf clubs fishing, poles and some trail running shoes. I'd like to do some 4 wheeling while out there

I see a few good looking trails on OnX and wanted to see if anyone has recommendations to keep my on the dirt?
    • Any good fly fishing spots accessible by 4x4 only?
    • I'd like to drive 'up' with the bikes and let the kids cruise mostly down on a long trail if possible. Clara Peak?
    • Hoodoos and Caldera look the most technical from OnX ... good trail? Any others?
    • recommended golf course?
    • any 'must stop' food in the area?

Hey OP, try posting in the New Mexico thread. There's folks there that should have some good ideas for you.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-mexico-owners-bs-thread.32579/

I hope you enjoy yourself. You picked a good year to visit as we've had plenty of rain and things should be good and green - relatively speaking as it is a desert. River flows are currently 3 - 4 times what they were last year, so take that into consideration when fishing or when you're near running water. All the reseviors are up as well.

If you happen to be passing through nearby El Rito, El Farolito is one of my most favorite hole-in-the-wall New Mexican restaurants. Hours can be limited. Google says 1:30 to 7:30 so it may be worth a call ahead.

One thing I'll recommend is to keep an eye on your stuff and keep it locked up. NM is a poor state with a property crime issue that's primarily poverty and drug related.

Not sure if you already went on this trip.....my experience in that area is from motorcycling. If you haven't heard of the BDR folks (backcountry discovery route), they have a route for New Mexico and the GPX tracks are free. I did it a few years ago. Went right through Abiquiu. Typical forest service roads, some easy gravel travel, some two track. I was back in that general area, north of El Rito, in May of this year....good scenery. Little bit of snow issues :)
