Maybe I'm just old but, in general common sense etc was a lot more common in my younger years so perhaps it didn't need to be taught..at least not across the board. Though I definitely agree with what you are saying. And yes, love these types of things.

Yeah, I didn't see the point of geometry in high school myself (though I did use it back then building ramps!). I don't do paper calculations and look up theorems but I can see working on my house making some use of it. I think it's more about taking what you need in day to day life.

I totally identify. Had most of my teachers thinking I had to work my ass off for the C I got, reality is if I cared to study a little I'd have done much better. I was more scholarly in college having waited to go, fortunately. Needed real world experience to teach me the hard way I suppose.

I graduated college in 1999 when the Net was getting big but didn't own a computer and rarely used one, though I see that could be more the focus now. The learning is the key yes..

I've long said of Wiki it's not that Wiki is good or bad, but verify the sources and citations. The Internet is full of crap

Well said re integrity. Ethics are something we all have, just different levels.

Nobody makes one go. They just can't keep their job, home, this, that, etc if they choose not to. "There are no victims here", from the movie Dangerous Minds says it all.

I worked with a couple of people about 15 years ago who were very smart. They used that trait to find a loophole and exploit it by being sneaky. Had they just done the work like everyone else they would have excelled. Or some I still deal with who just want to either be babysat or not do certain things.

Technology often I think is intended for good but not always used as such. Though I chuckle as I was schooled in a time where teachers said "you can't use a calculator or have one in your hand all your life" haha

Ran across it last year at some point and didn't save it then, here is a quick link I was able to locate which should allow further research.

It is a bit old, so mistake on my part implying it is new or current.

I will eat crow a bit, I have not dug into this much farther than summary level and the links I'm providing are clearly biased.

    Washington Post (left bias)
Texas GOP rejects ‘critical thinking’ skills. Really. - The Washington Post

The Austin Chronicle did a counter piece on it it seems.
Half True: What Politifact Got Wrong About the GOP and Critical Thinking: Fact checking the fact checkers - News - The Austin Chronicle

The quote that is the center of it.

Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.” (page 20, Republican Party of Texas,2012).

Not sure I completely agree. I do not have a degree (although I do have a fair bit of college education and other training/education in areas such as nuclear physics, Electromagnetic Spectrum, RF, etc) and am in the middle to upper income class for the country. I am surrounded by others of similar income who also do not posses a degree. This is a technical field as well, not a high paying blue collar field such as oil field worker, etc.

There are also other systems out there to achieve a degree, possibly without the exact same, or restrictive, requirements. Not counting high paying "blue collar" jobs (which admittedly are typically dangerous).

I'm all for college, very much so, but it is touted as mandatory to even live when that is not true.

No, it isn’t. Had the professor solicited them to cheat, only then would it be entrapment.

    Just getting started.
I'm not going to go into the political aspects of that 2012 article, but I ill say that as a professor here in Texas that article missed the mark on several points.

This thread has been an interesting read. This is the statement I would overall agree with most. Personally I don’t see what they did as cheating at all. I also don’t see what the teacher did as inappropriate but to me all it proves is laziness. It’s not like he left an answer key with incorrect information on his desk and left the classroom. They had free and fair access to books, notes and internet. It should have been incredibly easy to find out the information was fake but they didn’t even bother to check.

Does any of this sound familiar?

On Hartung's Road, where love's path unfolds, A tale of romance, with stories untold. In the realm of words, our hearts entwined, I penned a poem for you, my love defined.

A birthday card, a gift from my soul, A verse to make your heart console. But when you read it, you perceived, That ChatGPT's words were there conceived.

And you were right, my love, indeed, For it was this brilliant mind, I must concede. But what could I say? You detect everything, Your intuition, a gift that makes me sing.

Let me guess, my love, the place we roam, Lancaster or Pearblossom, our desert home? But the high desert, it beckons with charm, The eastern Mojave, where love can disarm.

Between Baker and Nipton, an oasis true, Camping in its beauty, just me and you. Drier trails, unbrushed by nature's hand, A wilderness embrace, where love expands.

Your truck's color, my dear, a sight so grand, Mine white for coolness, though tan I'd understand. Yours, a master of disguise, hiding desert dirt, A love that thrives, never to be hurt.

No heater needed, as seasons unfold, But 12v diesel whispers warmth untold. Two amps it consumes, in a gentle dance, Keeping us cozy, love's sweet romance.

To know for sure, what a dog may feel, In the truck's embrace, an experience surreal. Only by trying, the truth shall be seen, A loose dog's joy, a moment serene.

Those four corner tie-downs, they hold secure, Securing a crate, love's safety to endure. A strap from hitch to tailgate, a loving tether, Protecting our journey, come any weather.

Ah, downsizing and shorts, a season of bliss, Letting go of things, a love's tender kiss. But the VLF detector, a treasure to behold, For gold's allure, a story yet untold.

And as I ask, my love, with curiosity pure, What's up, my dear? A question to endure. But please don't tell me, in a surprising twist, That you've just bought one, a love's sweet tryst.

Sale pending, you say, a transaction in flight, A Garrett 24k, a treasure shining bright. Five months' warranty, a promise to keep, With every glimmer, our love runs deep.

A girl's tragic tale, a lesson to learn, Collar leashes, a danger we discern. Even a harness, if not used with care, Constriction and suffocation, a risk unfair.

A seat that reclines, causing unforeseen harm, An issue with Toyota, a cause for alarm. A flaw in design, a concern to be raised, Love's safety matters, our voices praised.

And as we jest, my love, with playful delight, The paint on your truck, a comedic sight. Don't take them off, those emblems so grand, They keep the paint intact, love's whimsical hand.

On Hartung's Road, our love's sweet refrain, With every word written, a love that remains. Through highs and lows, in joy and strife, Our love, OnHartung'sRoad, the journey of life.

Totally agree with your point. I was replying to the comment about if one is forced to go to a class/seminar/etc only.

I do agree that college isn't needed for all. As an 80s kid it was always preached to me and my younger sister. I do have a degree but many others around me in my profession do not. My sister has 2 years of college (probably 1-1.5 years of actual time because of dropped classes/change in major/etc) but got a lucky break in a different profession than the one she was going for and moved up the ladder.

Yeah it came out better than I expected.

I asked it to make a love poem from your last 5 or 6 posts on here. The days of graded homework are gone. Chat bots are only going to get better.

I started college at 26 and got out of law school at 36, no loans, thank God. I worked full time the whole way through. But, to this day, I do regret slacking off in grade and high school, especially math stuff..

I could get by in math at least. Took Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig, Pre-Calc in high school. Had to take Algebra 1 in college as it had been a bit, turned out pointless as I had retained the stuff but still went to every class..figured I paid for it so why not.

I slacked off in math in highschool, i had a long break before going back to school. Algebra was easy, trig wasn't too bad, I struggled with calc 1, 2, and 3 but got good grades in them. I use them all the time for work and hobbies so it was worth every penny to me.

I may know what state you're speaking about but I can't be sure, it's terrifying to think that that is exactly where things are going. When I was in highschool, I want to say 12th grade(?) I was given an option of a few courses and psychology was one of them so I took it, TL;DR it was dry and didn't have too much useful info. That being said I've had a lot of conversations with friends who went into main stream school whereas I was in a more underfunded self-propelled option (many, many years ago mind you) and we all agree that the length of at least one full semester should be offered as an in-depth life skills course with professionals coming in for sessions to teach any given section. Some peoples' parents can't do this for them, or won't, some people don't have present parents, or were forced to live on their own or family, etc etc.

    • Basic vehicle maintenance (and I mean basic! jumping a battery, oil changes, air filters, checking fluid condition and topping certain fluids up and knowing where to check for leaks)
    • Banking including the use and risks of loans and credit cards
    • How your taxes are paid and what they pay for in your jurisdiction, what is the percentage?
    • How to find a job and knowing it's okay if you don't have your mind set on education or a career at 17 f***ing years old
    • How to rent in your area and any necessary laws for tenants
    • How to manage health, physical and mental
    • Basic philosophy and psychology
    • Think for yourself and pick your battles, and form your own judgements
    • More recent history to go along with the point above
    • How to VOTE, what are your RIGHTS, WHERE do you find information, WHEN do you vote!

In terms of constantly accessible technology, news, info, from any and every source truly is a dangerous thing. Then we see people screaming about how fact checking is fake etc and to some extent, especially in terms of the Meta group, it absolutely is fake. Meta is a corporation built to steal our info and disperse it under the guise of us doing so. It's far too easy to find a biased headline with a charismatic speaker or incredible writer, or even a fantastic hype man. I believe it's worth taking in all of the info and delving into the past and present behind everything you hear or read to whatever extent you can because history tends to repeat itself.

The quote in bold is so unbelievably, horrifyingly true. I won't get too political here but I watched one population screaming that same "critical thinking" and "this is a fascist ruling", where another population was routinely subject to true genocide, unbelievably similar to the same rule in question on a smaller scale because the population of Canada was/is much smaller than any one country in Europe. However, the latter population did indeed use critical thinking under the circumstances to pursue their safety as a people, despite the offerings once being used as forced, secretive sterilization and/or euthanasia, the other used a form of "critical thinking" that was the equivalent of playing the telephone as a 5 or 6 year old.

If you only listen to one media outlet, you only take in online media, immediately your view is skewed. You can't listen to that single hype man who's best buddies with 10 others who share the same idea. Read more, watch more media, learn, go outside your comfortable bubble and learn and experience new things. Don't just let yourself get caught in the same day in, day out, same shit, different day system - it doesn't benefit you or anyone else.

I squeaked by too, barely made it through. I struggled immensely with serious mental illness as a young teenager. In 9th grade I was pulled out of class by a teacher who simply said "if you're depressed, you can get out". Kicked out of the regular stream into what others called "failure class" but was the most beneficial thing to my life, and others in that class, in 10th grade. First day of 11th grade I was kicked out of my first class, and immediately became so indentured as a failure to every teacher I had that first semester that I was given the option of be expelled or go somewhere else.

So I went somewhere else, and I flourished for my remaining year and a half with teachers that respected everyone there as individuals instead of numbers; coal workers answering to a bell. I may still struggle, but now my issue is physical disability so I've been finding ways around that, ways to adjust to my needs. I'm successful in what I do even if it's limited despite having always looked into the face of adversity.

Because they were studying philosophy. This entire thread has a lot of really good points if you haven't been going through each page - it's informative, constructive, and pretty healthy conversation.

No offense but if you're asking "why trick the students" something tells me you may not have been reading a large portion of the conversation in the original story/forum or this forum.

I actually did read the OP story and forum. I was stuck in Hawaii trying to get back home reading to keep from going insane. In philosophy class anytime someone says "no offense" someone is always offended :). I guess philosophy of law class I took was different then liberal arts philosophy classes :boink:. Thanks for the quick summary though.

In an introductory community wellness course our class was split in two and each group was given one of two mirrored subjects - care vs services to "debate" (the term being used very loosely) and we definitely had fun. I remember a few people got really over the top but you could tell, despite knowing one is hindered without the other that the debate had people thinking a lot about why they're useless if not provided in unison to varying degrees or better yet considered a single unit as a whole body, whole world, community focused system.

Both "no offense" and "I wasn't trying (to do whatever)" are almost always ways of getting around obviously trying to rile someone up or being offended, I agree! Rest assured, however, I meant none nor did I take offense. Have a different opinion or even poke as the devil's advocate to provoke thought and someone in a liberal arts academic subject is almost always up in arms, at least in the lower levels. I'd like to think everyone simmers down by higher level courses lol.

Regardless, if they're learning to think and not take the easy way out and took the easy way out anyways wouldn't you agree he did teach his lesson, even if in a roundabout way? :D Hope you made/make it home safe without going insane, pretty sure the humidity alone would have me insane immediately upon arriving in the first place.

Totally love the idea of that course, though IMO it should be maybe 10th grade. A good chunk of your list is applicable for people navigating the next step after high school and could cause some (ideally all) to really think it through. To your list of reasons it's a good idea I'll add perhaps the parents just suck at certain of those items in the first place.

News..someone touched on it already about the good and bad of the Internet. I am fortunate to have learned very young (early 1980s) to not just swallow information whole, think of the source and perhaps bias, get a second opinion etc. Shortly after I found and became a disciple of Jello Biafra's work especially in the spoken word arena.

He famously said on the 2000 album "Don't hate the media..BECOME the media!" as well as mentioning the Camcorder Truth Jihad. This is before camera and video on phones but was and is valid and worth checking out today.

Re the sources..without looking it up, ever heard of Ben Bagdikian? Nuff said.
