I'm the same as you mileage wise. I change with 5-30 syn every 6 months. I make sure the truck gets to operating temp every time I drive. 2 cents.

I asked my truck when I should change the oil. It didn’t answer.
So I guess the decision is on me.

    I’m sticking with at/around 5k miles.
Oil type doesn’t matter. Standard/Synthetic what ever is cheaper.

I use synthetic and change it out every 1,000 miles which comes out to every 6-8 months. With mostly short trips, towing a boat, and some offroading the oil is pretty dark by then.

depends if your area gets seasons or not

oil turns black quick which is not an indicator of its condition

but yeah use is a factor like you said, off road, short trips, towing, and things like idle time

    Ha Ha - I thought I didn't go anywhere now that I'm retired - I was thinking 2X a year since I'll never make 5K n 6 months.

7500 miles for synthetic or whenever the maintenance light goes on. I check fluid levels every other week.

Since I retired and found my church home at last (as Mom put it, happily), early on the church accountant told me, "You need to learn to 'Just say No.'" (Remember First Lady Nancy Reagan with Mr. T.? She said that.) So this year I have a ten mile roundtrip in the morning six days a week, with another trip five nights a week as 4-hour night custodian at the elementary school i serve mornings as their volunteer crossing guard. After ten years in the latter position, I think I'll be calling it good at the school, and go on to other projects (replacing carpeting in my 17 year old condo with waterproof plank flooring, more Taco projects, sitting grandkids and taking them fishing after I scout the spots), and...

A student asked me one morning, "Do you work?" "I'm working right now, and when I'm awake, I'm usually working on something." :rimshot: It all starts with something like the custodian's, "You're retired. Ever consider part time work?" or "As long as you're doing that, why don't you do this, too?":)

Wow - That's some write up - Just thought I'd comment since I'm a retired custodian too - I was a maintenance custodian and fixed everything in the school for 35 years plus did bus runs after school when needed. I also - like you - watch the grand kids - take them to school and pick them up when needed plus work on my Taco and my wife's Honda. Glad you're keeping busy.

Typically every 6 months in the spring and fall. But I'm usually pretty close to the 5,000 miles by that time anyway.

Synthetic every 10k and you’re set. If you can time it on an even 5k or 10k mileage you’re even more set.
