With the upcoming changes to the V6 Tacoma (and V6 4runner for that matter), is the existing drivetrain something we should be going after for long term value?

The 3.5 V-6 was the wrong motor for a pickup truck. It was never a good choice simply due to where the power came on in the RPM band. IF Toyota sets the 4 banger up properly, low end torque will come on far earlier and at lower RPM's and torque is what moves things.

I will never change my mind that Toyota always had the proper V-6 available which was the V-6 that had both intake and exhaust VVT and was already in use. It was in my 14'' FJ and you could tell the difference between it and the standard V-6 my 15' Tacoma had.

And the gearing was totally fooked in the auto 6, I know what they were going after but they failed due to the power band and overly high gearing in the last 2 speeds of the 6 speed.

Most people aren't excited at the thought of that 2GR-FKS...and the new turbo 4 either.

Toyota used that 3.5 because that was least worst option for them back in 2015/16. Not because it was the best option.

Probably not. The V-6 is not a legendary earth-shattering engine, and it is not rare. We're not talking about a 69 Hemi Cuda Convertible of which only a couple of hundred were built.

It was for me. I don’t buy new model runs. I chose to get a 23 vs a 24 at a higher price & turbo 4 cylinder

Yes. Buy 6 and park them.

After the foreign hackers take down our power grid and EVs are useless, you can be the new Postman, aka Kevin Costner.

Yep I own 2 of them 300K still running when sold, not even close to a blazing performer but they worked fine. Like my 4L a lot better.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
I don’t get the panic over not being a v6 Tacoma or 4runner. Power plants / technology change over time and we all still here having fun. As I have said before the 22re, 4ag, 1gr, 2jz, 5vz, 1uz, and so on, and so on, we’re the new untested tech that some people back then shat on. Sit back, relax and crack the beverage of your choice and enjoy the show. We are still gonna be looking for ways to fuck with them and crawl some rocks. Cheers!
