Has anyone done an oil filter relocation? If so where did you get it?

I was changing my oil yesterday and the filter is a pain in the ass.. I even had the truck on a lift and the old filter was a K&N filter that has the 1" bolt on the end... Changing the filter took the longest!

Last week I changed the oil in my Xterra and it took me 30mins! it took me a hour to do the truck. Both times include getting the truck on the lift and taking off the skid plates and what not..

I have one on my Tacoma, makes changing the oil a very easy process, filter was relocated to the left front fenderwel. It was on the truck when I bought it. So I can not help you, where to locate one.

Ive had the same difficulties changing my oil too. It was located under the left front fender. It was so tight on there that i couldnt even turn it with a filter clamp let alone my own hand! I ended up punching the side of the filter with a long screw driver to turn it. What a pain!! But after i did it someone told me you can just take off the skid plate and you get way better access to it!

Yeah you're supposed to take off the skidplate, makes the job easy. Is it just me or is changing the oil filter not that big of a deal. Being a mechanic and seeing so many different vehicles, the 3.4's oil filter is about average, it's no big deal so long as you take off the skidplate. There are WAAAYYY worse designs that will make you slap yourself for complaining lol.

make sure you use a good metal braided hose ....the hoses that come in those kits have been known to leak.

I had the relocation kit on my Tacoma for over 100K!
It worked great and made oil changes a snap - no more skid plate removal.
I just took it off since the gasket between the block off plate and the engine block developed at leak.
It WILL be being put back on at the next oil change!
I used rubber lines and never had any issues.

i dont find it hard at all to get to just turn your wheels left and remove the rubber guard inside the driver side wheel well and theres the filter easy to get to and take off takes me 30-40 mins tops.

whoah.... what's all this "remove the skid plate" B.S.?
I have yet to remove a skid plate to gain access to my oil filter.
Haven't heard of such talk since the old days of apartment living & instant oil change shops. "oh, we're gonna probably hafta remove the skid plate to get your filter off - that'll be an extra charge for that"... f'n horseshit!

3.4L is not that tough to remove the filter - it's just messy. Because of the angle you (I) seem to dump half of the contents of the filter down onto the skid plate.

    I'm not trying to be a prick, it's late & I'm drinkin'.
Sorry if I offend, but seriously - removing the skid plate is making it way harder than it needs to be.

I didn't say that you have to remove the skid plate to gain access, its to make the job easier and faster b/c of way less cleanup. We do not charge extra to remove the skidplate, which is only six 12 mm bolts and which only takes like 30 seconds to remove and it benefits us b/c its much cleaner and we waste a lot less brakeclean.

I would say Toyota missed the mark on the oil filter, while no better or worse than many as to location, who designed it so that you can't but spill oil all over whether you take the skid plate off or not. A straight up and down adapter would be an instant hit in the 3.4 community I think.

    Look at build!

x2 isnt hardly anything for our trucks, but when you get the ones like a 240 where its under the header those are a PITA and takin the skid plate off is a 1 minute job with a cordless impact or even a drill :D

i'm sober now :D sorry if I was a dick earlier...

reading through these posts got me thinkin' - with the comment about being short (my dad is about same height),
I'm always reaching down from top, standing in front of the truck. I know right where to find the filter & there's a narrow passage way that just feels familiar every time.
It just occurred to me that the instant oil change shops do a lot of their work from below (something I'm not used to -
the only thing I get down there for is the drain plug). I guess it's just a matter of perspective - the flow of your oil change routine that you're accustomed to.

For me, someone who does most of the work topside, it would be more time & effort to remove the skidplate than it's worth.

I have considered the filter relocation kit just for the soul purpose of keeping things clean under there.
I ALWAYS end up dumping about half the filter's capacity due to the angle that it sits.
