Is this buildup on the Oil cap and filler normal?

Recently inherited a 2016 Limited V6 with 130k miles. Went ahead to do my first oil change and noticed this rust-looking buildup on the oil cap and filler neck. Is this normal? Or am I looking at a not that well taken care of tacoma? The crust seems to be really on there as wiping it had no effect unless I really started scraping

1 owner from New Jersey so it’s seen a lot of salt. It was brought to the dealership for all of its maintenance but did also sit for about 1-1.5 years only occasionally being driven right before I took ownership.

 

That does not look normal ...at all.

 

If you have a sample of the oil if you went through with the oil change, send it off for analysis to get a better idea what's going on in your engine. Blackstone seems to be popular.

Well, I just purchased a bore scope that comes in on Thursday so I'll be doing some digging.

Hopefully this engine isn't covered in sludge or experiencing some wild head gasket issue. The truck runs perfectly fine with no smoke from the tailpipe or other indicators of major engine issues. It does have a massive oil leak from the timing case though. I can't really think of anything that would be causing this. I know condensation build up happens from short trips but this is more than just that.

 

That’s normal for a vehicle that sits quite a bit and wonder if it is only taken on short trips.

get underneath the truck and take a really good look at the frame, now might be the time to take some preventative measures if there is some corrosion buildup present

 

I've seen similar coco-ish frothy buildup inside these caps for many short trips which would look normal in that case.

 

Most of that will disappear if you take it on long drives often. Most oil we use has detergents in it, and the engine will eventually get cleaned up if you follow 5K oil changes.

Sounds like a plan, what’s considered longer trips? My commute to work is ~25 minutes / 17 miles one way, with most of it being on the highway.

 

This,,, don’t go scratchin’ for an itch. You already bought it, so just change the oil and run her to the ground. I’m no tech, but this is higher mileage vehicle, so I’d expect this.

 

If the inside of the engine looks good then should be ok . But I would replace the filler neck and cap asap . That’s alot of rust .

 

I would be very concerned about the massive oil leak you mentioned. It could be the timing cover.

The answers lie in this post. That sludge is the result of one of two things that happened because of the oil leak. First is they weren't keeping up with refilling the oil fast enough, and the oil was cooking because it didn't have enough time in the pan to cool. Second option is they kept refilling the oil, but stopped doing changes. In either case it doesn't look like it went on very long, so you're probably still in good shape.

After the leak is fixed and a fresh oil change, I would change the filter after 500 miles, and a full oil and filter after 500 more.

Hmm, my '97 Civic, that was neglected on the oil changes (Car was neglected to the point that the dude I got it from never changed the MT tranny fluid and I had to replace it with a rebuild at 134k), takes mostly short trips, with 176k on the odo, doesn't look like that.
