Searched all over and cannot find any answers. My speedo went out and after determining it was the cable I got a new cable with the housing. I pulled apart the dash and disconnected the cable from the cluster and on the other end from the transmission. But now I am stuck trying to remove it from the firewall. When I look at it from the engine bay side, the cable comes out through a metal tube-like opening that has the ends of two bolts sticking through, like the connection is bolted to the firewall. But when I look from the cab side there are no bolts and it just slips into a hole in the firewall. Because the opening is so small I can't pull the cable housing all the way through. It seems like maybe there is something else I have to remove first inside the cab but I'm not sure what that would be.

Based on all other write-ups I've seen on this I think I'm missing something really obvious but just can't seem to see it. Anyone done this before and could clue me in on how to remove the speedo cable housing from the firewall?

Pics are of the speedo cable housing crossing the firewall from both inside the cab and inside the engine bay.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
unbolt the nuts from those two studs that piece comes off you can remove the cable.

there might be that hard rubber undercoating sprayed on the inside that you will need to chip off.

Okay I chipped off some of that hard rubber stuff but maybe not enough. So there isn't something else in between the cab and my access to those studs, just the rubber stuff? I'll get in there after work today.

The studs will stay in place !

There is no access to them in the cab only on the engine side .

Well yep it was that easy! Part of my confusion is that I bought the wrong replacement part that has a rubber grommet instead of the metal bracket. So that's great. I guess I also learned that the VIN verification at the dealership means nothing.

Trying to figure out the correct part number and I think its 83710-35110 but not certain. Searched high and low for the difference between part nos. 83710-35090 and 83710-35110. Any idea there? My truck is a 96 sr5 xtra cab.

The new cable will not work at all??

From what I can remember the only difference is in length the cab end will be the same.

With these trucks one never knows what might have changed.

Can you take pictures of both?

The one I have is 4" longer than the one I think is the right one. And the grommet for the firewall is a bit small so it doesn't fully cover the opening. But I haven't tried to install it yet.
