First it was the temperature sensor, now it's these three holes on the side of the air intake. Only explanation I can think of is it needed more airflow for some unknown reason. Any ideas?

I don't know. The truck is in great condition and works great. I just can't wrap my head around these work around and why he did some things. But you could be right. I'm kind of afraid to try and revert all these things back to factory because I don't know if I'll uncover a monster of a problem in the future.

That where the extra 20hp comes from.

and then if you water cross, it acts as an engine cooler.

    Found this on the internet
Drilling the airbox can give you slightly better air flow and much 'better' sound.Just drill on the intake side not the carb side. That is make sure that all air getting to the carb HAS passed through the air filter. My best guess …

That's what I found too. I figured it'd be best to ask though. I'm thinking of changing it out and also getting the air intake line to the charcoal canister. If all else fails I can always revert it back until I figure out any real issues. What do you think?

    I think you're right.

Because the internet is collectively smarter than the engineers who designed the intake.

@Tacomahound555 these holes may draw additional air on the correct side of the filter. However, it's hot engine bay air, not ambient air.

If mine, I'd plug the holes. Or find a replacement box that someone local was willing to give me because they 'upgraded' to some magical high $ CAI from the aftermarket.

Me personally would just plug the holes and be done with it . Modifying an air box really has no benefits unless you are running a turbo or a supercharger that requires more airflow .

Nothing like turning the stock cai into a hai to improve performance (sarcasm).
    I'd plug them up, too.
My only hack was removing the accelerator in the fender.

That's weird. My only concern is getting the temp sensor or gauge back to how it should be. If you check my other post you'll see how he rerouted things to the coolant exit hose.

I would definitely get that airline replaced if you haven't. The filter you put on sb fine. Idk anything about the temp gauge. and the intake box you could probably just tape over the holes or plug them with something.
Truck looks nice and clean under the hood.

Those holes were for his pet mice.

    I’d replace the box.

Just drill some holes in the fender and throw a hood scoop on the fender. DONE!

I’d probably just spray some foam insulation on it and wrap it with duct tape.
