Hi - first time poster here. I recently bought a 2023 TRD OR and pulled the dipstick yesterday to check oil level and noticed that the dipstick smelled like fuel. Oil cap smells like fuel too. Truck has 1,600 miles on it, runs fine and I followed Toyotas recommended break in protocol. Oil still looks new. My question is - is this normal for new trucks? I ordered a test kit from Blackstone labs and am planning on draining the oil this week but I’m worried about faulty engine components and longevity of the engine vs regular break in. Hopefully others have experienced the same thing and all is well after the first oil change!

Gotcha, thanks. I was actually reading through that thread last night as a lurker lol… I plan on taking that guys approach (changing oil, sending samples to Blackstone and monitoring smell of the oil and taking to dealer if problem persists) but I do not have the fuel economy issues/ black oil like he did. Since the truck is so new and I caught this early I’m hoping there isn’t any serious damage done :fingerscrossed:.

I think he was yanking your chain lol. One thing you might consider doing is taking in to the dealer now anyway with the complaint so there is an RO issued on it and it's in your service record. That way if anything happens a few months down the road it's in your vehicles service history (along with the dealer telling you it's normal....every problem you take to them is normal :))

I’m hoping it’s fine. I had bad luck with the 13 Tacoma I traded in so I’m a little overcautious and picky with this one.

My '23 has 1100 miles on it and I checked the oil and it was nice clean oil. I saw the other thread and checked mine after that.

Mine is clean-looking too but smells. Did yours smell like fuel?

An easy way to check for fuel contaminated oil is by using a white piece of paper to wipe the oil dipstick . Leave the white piece of paper alone for 5 minutes . If you see lighter color stain forming beyond the oil smear that's an indication of fuel contamination

Agree with FL TRD, make sure it gets documented, even if that means calling Toyota yourself.

I didn't stick it up to my nose and smell it but I didn't smell anything checking it as normal. I'll go pull the stick and smell it

Will do. I’ll be calling tomorrow AM. Because I have a long commute to work tomorrow, I sorta want to get this oil out of my truck asap. I dont have an extra filter or crush washers but was gonna swing by Toyota on Wednesday to pick some up. Not sure if I should just wait to do an oil and filter change on Wednesday or just drain and refill the oil today and worry about the filter later. I just don’t wanna cause further damage if something’s wrong

Mine (23 TRDOR) has about 3K miles. I changed the oil at 500 miles and at 1700 miles with TGMO 0w20 and just got back from a 1000 mile round trip with most of it at highway speeds... I don't smell any gas in oil (dipstick to shnoze0 other than the redolent aroma of new engine :p

Hmmm okay. Maybe I should be a bit worried then? idk. My last Tacoma wasn’t the most reliable (a lot of small issues one after another) so I’m a little jaded.
I just want a normal, reliable Tacoma man lol

A Blackstone report will put your mind at ease or give you ammunition when questioning the dealer. It's cheap insurance, and I plan to do it at 10K miles just to see how things are going.

Don't let the 2nd genners hear you talkin' bad about the chariot of the gods. They'll have a cow.

You could have some blow-by if the rings haven't seated properly yet. Don't baby it!
