I'm old enough to remember when Toyota put truck engines in their cars. The Celicas with 20 and 22r's were not a great match...

Mine regularly clunked into and out of torque converter lockup at 40 MPH when I was in overdrive. Drove me insane. I had the transmission replaced under warranty and it still did it. Allegedly there was a reflash which would solve it but I could never get the dealer to apply it since it focused on pinging mainly at high altitudes. I used to drive around in "D" instead of overdrive to get the thing to stop clunking and I'd watch the transmission fluid temperature shoot up. It wouldn't do it at lower or higher speeds but when the bulk of my commute was at that speed it was maddening. That and the reputation the early 3G transmissions were getting was enough to make me opt for the manual.

Right there with you on the aluminum wheels looking leaps and bounds better when we were younger...now that everything has aluminum wheels, the old school steelies are stating to look good; never thought that would be the case.

No kidding! I wanted those twisted looking aluminum wheels so bad when I was in my late teens/early 20s, they were too cool! couldn’t afford them, so I got chrome steelies instead. Could not wait to get the stock wheels off my 85 4Runner. Skimped and saved for a Downey 3” Lift and BFGs….just had to have it.

Who would have thunk stock steelies and hubcaps would be cool, we used to make fun of our friends dad with them on his 70s F250.

Sold this 4Runner for $2500 25 years ago, the guy couldn’t get the cash in my hands fast enough, had no clue back then. Dunno that vehicle was a pain, engine died at 125K, birfs are fussy, second engine went another 100K and the crank bearings failed, no idea why I kept with Toyota all these years, guess the other manufacturers were worse at the time.
