I have 2000 Tacoma xtracab I recently bought off my dad. There are some minor issues that need repair and I’m not sure if this rust is okay. There is no cracking or corrosion on the frame just what appears to be surface rust. How do I get rid of it and keep it from coming back?IMG_6312.jpg

    Welcome to the Forum!

Depends just what options you have to use .

    Media blasting of some sort.

Wire brushing with air or electric tools or by hand.

Depends where the Truck lives Primer and Paint or something like fluid film .

Comes down to how much winter chemicals the truck sees.

For a 23 YO truck very little rust. How many miles? Look like a desert truck.

How much work and time are you preparing for? Easy route is to spray it with Fluid Film and forget it. Dirty and time consuming is to wire wheel and paint.

It’s been in Montana it’s entire life so it’s had it’s fair share of road salt. Right now it’s sitting at 211000 miles. I have heard negative things about painting the frame and trapping moisture. Is fluid film something u could apply yourself or do you need to take it to a shop?

2 or 3 spray cans. I got several year supply (case of 12) from Amazon.

image.jpg I just picked up a bottle. Do u think it would be possible to do it with one can? Should I be drenching the frame or just give it a little spray over?

It’s not permanent, it’s a treatment not a cure. Most people do it once a year. I do it every other year. :anonymous: I sprayed everything, frame, crossmembers, shock mounts etc.. First spray soaked in so it took 2-3 cans.

PS they make a Omni spray wand to get into the boxed sections.

Do a fluid film before every winter season.

I think your confusing Paint with poorly applied Rubber under coating .

That does tend to bubble and trap moisture.

Worse case paint just peels off and needs repainted.

Lots of us apply products like Fluid Film in a home type settings . I do mine every fall.

Never hurts to wash things off if possible.

I just applied the fluid film a hour ago. Will it turn clear eventually? It looks absolutely disgusting right now and looks very stinky?

IMG_6348.png Do y’all think rustoleum would do a lot? It would look a lot cleaner I would think? Would it trap moisture and just cause more damage?

Might consider a rust converter you can just brush on. Like Coroseal. I am in the process of sandblasting and repainting (epoxy primer, acrylic top coat) the frame of my 2000. I can't say I recommend it unless you are a glutton for punishment. Given the choice again at the beginning, I'd just Coroseal.
