Finally got back in a Tacoma went to little rock last Saturday picked up a new TRD Off Road access cab check for any recalls none. Playing around today on Toyota website and I'll be damned a recall.

    Title

SAFETY (NONCOMPLIANCE) RECALL 23TA08 (Interim Notice 23TB08) - Multiple 2023 Models - Driver Airbag May Not Deploy

    Status

    Remedy Not Available

    Description

In the affected vehicles, the spiral cable assembly in the steering column may lose its electrical connection on the circuit controlling the driver’s airbag. If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and the driver’s airbag may not deploy in a crash. As a result, the vehicle will not comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety requirements and may increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash.

    Remedy

Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this issue. When the remedy is available, Toyota dealers will inspect the serial number of the spiral cable and, if necessary, replace it with a new cable FREE OF CHARGE. At this time, Toyota estimates the remedy can be made available in August 2023.

You dont need airbags if you dont plan on crashing. They should remove them anyway to reduce the price and weight for better mpg

nice new truck, it could have already had it, but since there is no fix yet, they didn't mention it. Or just timing, these things happen all the time.

And if that cable is bad the cruise won't work and the horn won't either. At least on earlier models.

Spiral cables have been a thorn for many first and 2nd gen owners for years.

Hmm, weird... I just plugged my '23 TRD OR into the Toyota website and mine has no recalls. In the grand scheme of things if my choices are the airbag deploys when it's not supposed to or doesn't deploy when it is supposed to, I'd choose the latter.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
As long as the airbag light is not illuminated, you're good. Don't worry about it until they take a look at it.

It's just a bad batch from 2023, more than Tacoma is involved.

Toyota is fairly good at announcing them and fixing the issues.

So far Tacoma has been good overall for safety concerns, very few recalls in this regard.

The new 2022 tundra already has a bunch, and they havent stopped introducing more.

Do they use Takata airbags? Many auto manufacturers have air bag recalls for 2023

I wouldn’t worry about till u get a letter from the dealer for it . If you are really worried about it . You can call the dealership to see if your vehicle is affected by it .

There’s some Honda’s that they have issued a “stop sale “ till multiple recalls are done on brand new cars

I did a quick search and it looks like the NTSB has these on some Corollas and Tundras.

For possible airbag wiring faults? I've seen stop sale recalls but they were usually like vehicle not really be engaged in park or vehicle most likely will catch fire in seriouse way.

I'd trade that one for the child seat anchor one that is still open on my 2022. That one the technician inspector gets to tear apart the rear interior, and chisel on the anchors to try and break the welds. I still can't believe in this day chiseling on a vehicle part like that is an acceptable method. So many variables.

If the weld breaks, then it is tear even more stuff out, grind off paint, and weld the them onto the sheet metal. Then paint. What could go wrong...

If Honda has any recalls.. no matter what they are they issue stop sales directly to the dealer… we had about 32 in the last 2 weeks for Most Bus connector recalls..

Of course. If I'm driving down the road, and my airbag goes off for no reason, that's very bad. But if I get in a relatively minor fender bender and my airbag is supposed to go off, but doesn't, no big deal. Everyone lives and life goes on. People were just fine without airbags for over 100 years in minor crashes.

I’d argue they didn’t do just fine without them and consistently died in serious accidents that people survive daily now.
There’s tons variables both ways, but from my perspective the chances of dying from a random deployment are less frightening than the chances of dying without a bag in a severe accident.
Yea it sucks when it deploys in a fender bender. It’s annoying and frustrating, but it’s just doing its job. When a drunk asshole crosses the yellow while we are both doing 60+, I want it going off.
I was just curious. Thanks for sharing your thought process!
