Thank you, it’s fun times behind the handles. It’s cool to use an oldie but goodie. Yes, an 820. I feel like I’m the keeper now. Going to try my best to keep this slice of Americana going for many years.

 

Oh hell, can’t believe I didn’t see this and that’s what happens when ya get eggcited and want to share, lol. That’s truly bad ass hometown! And functionality on a Taco???!!!

 

Anyone have any experience machining and welding 4130?

I’m going to be building a front recovery point kinda like ARB’s. Minus the hook, and after doing some research, I won’t be welding it to the frame(planned on a few welds).

Which end mills are best for this steel and which RPM to use on a Jet mill, thank you!!!

I really like Helical end mills. They have a great website for picking stuff, you can usually get them in a day or two with ground shipping and they have great charts for speeds/feeds... Like this: (https://harveyperformance.widen.net/content/iys414otng/pdf/SF_HEV-5.pdf?u=1i9tm9) RPM will depend on the diameter of the tool. looks like you would want to run about 260 SFM or 2000 rpm for a 1/2" end mill.

Been working on getting my old half-sized Jet some more upgrades.... Stand by!

 

I've been suffering with a crappy solid-state phase converter for years and recently picked up a new belt sander (from Ameribrade - AWESOME) and it had a really nice speed control on it. I looked at the speed control company's website and they make 2-phae to 3-phase converting speed controls. About $400. I bought one. Fried it being a dumb-ass installing it. Sent it out for repairs and just got it back and got it wired up/mounted. I think it's gonna be a GAME CHANGER. We'll see how it does under load, but being able to twist a knob to change RPM is amazing. I can also go backwards now. Bananas!

Welded up a little bracket to mount it and the DRO.

In all seriousness, thank you for the info. I’ll be looking into this after I get the E-Locker installed this coming week. I’ve been itching to go to Industrial Metal Supply to look for the goods.

 

Curious if the chuck is the kind that you hand tighten?

I have one and amazingly I have never had issues with it.

 

It is. It’s an albrecht. My dad had three of them that came with the tools. I love them.

 

Absolutely slammed with rush work lately.

Damn, after seeing this, and several from a popular machine shop in OZ on FB, ain’t looking good as I wanted to build a custom recovery point, but the $$$$ are starting to add up just thinking about it. I will definitely need more than one end mill, the cost of the 4130, hardware…and whatever else I’m forgetting.

Been making stuff for my high school robotics team... Started playing with the high speed machining option and pushing the machine a little harder:


This is a little drill guide for drilling holes in rectangular tubing. Fun little project!

 

Jumping in on this thread. I work for a cutting tool + accessories distro. Not going to advertise it (unless anyone in Southern California is interested!) but if anyone needs help finding a tool or part number, hit me up!

Same goes for anything in a shop. Work/tool holding, coolant, metrology.

 

I had to make this thing from scratch for my used supercharger. Of course the only machined part was missing. I found the positions of the slots and holes on the cmm and just lofted the oil passages the same amount I rotate the holes. A lot nicer than the hack file job magnuson looks to do in their kit. Anyway I was a lead 5 axis machinist but now I'm in machine development and optimization.

I’m about to embark on a little project doing some stuff I haven’t tried yet… threadmilling… fixturing some thin parts with glue and tape… should get interesting

 

We threadmill everything. I'm not a big fan of tape since I'll forget to shut the coolant off.

 

With thread milling - with a single point threadmill you can cut small threads with a bigger cutter, right? (as long as it fits in the bore and won't bottom out?) I've got some 1" x 32 threads to cut but want to buy one cutter to do that and a bunch of 1/4" NPT.

Good day in the shop. Fixed my bandsaw. Got the last several projects' worth of chaos cleaned back up. Decided to pitch some old crap that is never going to get used. And moved my bicycles in to a different building so suddenly the shop is feeling very ready for more chaos! Er... tools! Heh heh

 

I picked this up recently. I'm EXTREMELY new to running a lathe. Basically teaching myself after watching This Old Tony and a few others on YouTube. I've made a few things here and there. The mini lathe behind it is eBay junk but got me to learn the basics and really get me hooked on this hobby.


I learned how to make tapers recently and had some pretty decent success with my first attempt.






I made this and gave it to my father-in-law. He was pretty impressed.
