Your air down PSI number that is....

Wondering what people are running off road?
    • Air down PSI
    • Tires
    • Shocks
    • Terrain Conditions
    • Speed

I noticed some pics on the site here where people are running 26PSI to 22PSI. I dial in to 18PSI on the stock Wranglers and shocks the truck came with but I got that number when I was running BFG ATKO's (slightly over sized) on a Ford Ranger. Suspension on the Ranger was a lot like riding a hard tail motorcycle with the back tire over inflated.

My conditions are graded trails, some even called roads or highways on the map so I'm not out extreme wheeling but in Arizona these roads are all rocky gravel up to broken boulders larger than a softball. Sometimes exposed bedrock too. Then dry sand or mud at a low water crossings and dry washes. Lots of washboard too - water haulers and heavy trucks ripple the road.

On the straightaways with good visibility, I'm rarely more than 20 to 30 MPH. When we get to bridges (one lane) or curves, I slow up CONSIDERABLY. Then the occasional technical driving to get over or around an obstacle (haven't had to in the Taco yet) I'm so slow it doesn't register on the dashboard. Can't wait to try out Crawl Control.

Side Note - Kinda disappointed that the locker and terrain management system is only available in 4-LO. Thought that would have more application in 4-HI. Either way... I'm 49 and been driving off road since I was 14 and never needed the bells and whistles. Even when all I had was 2WD vehicles I've recovered a ton of 4WD that got stuck. The best Terrain Management System sits between your ears.
