So my 04 drivers side window has been a little loose or misaligned for a while now, but it has finally gotten to where it only goes down about 4 inches then stops. Then when going back up it moves itself forward and does not deal properly (unless I guide it by hand). It’s a power window not roll down.

any insights? I found one thread that showed a bolt to be tightened toward the rear of the door but mine is missing, so maybe that’s it. But otherwise has anyone had this or a similar issue? Probably gonna take the panel off to diagnose it but hoping not to.

    thanks!

Window regulators go bad. Common issue on all makes and model of vehicle. If ones going the rest are likely to follow suit soon enough. Often times a cable snaps or one of the plastic clips wears out and cracks apart. Windows are heavy.

If the motor is good you can just replace the regulator. Otherwise you'll end up replacing both. Ive seen them come as separate parts and together as a unit. Not sure how tacomas come. If price isnt too bad, get the motor with it.

If the clips that hold the window in are not broken and just missing the bolt the find the bolt in the door and put it back in. Dont overtighten and shatter the glass.

Post your location in your profile, I have two extra regulators and a set of run channels. If you are nearby you can have it.

As far as that missing bolt, yes if that's gone the window has no guide and it will come off the track.

I'd replace the bolt and lube everything up. If that doesn't fix it you will probably need a regulator. Either way the trim panel has to come off.

I think you are referring to the rear lower frame bolt. It can definitely cause the window to bind up if it is loose or missing. You may need to take the door panel off to reposition it in order to get it to align so a new 10mm bolt can be installed.

The bolt is actually on the outside of the door(rear lower jam area), but it tightens into the frame (inside door) holding the window glass. Without the bolt, it will get mis-aligned and the glass will bind. Also, when you have the panel off, make sure the rubber glass run inside the window lower frame has not gotten out of the frame. It is the rubber inside that frame and the glass slides up and down in the rubber molding.

thanks for the insights fellas, going to take the door panel off soon and see what the issue is. The frame bolt has always been missing and for years it has slowly gotten worse but never this bad. I'd be willing to bet that bolt is the issue.

Will report back, but if anyone else has any more pertinent info I'd love to hear it. thanks

Well it ended up being that the metal guide channel that the outside bolt holds on was completely loose in the frame and also the window got out of the molding. Once I fixed that the window was still going crooked and noticed one of the white plastic pieces that holds it to the regulator was broken. Gonna try epoxy and tape for a quick fix
