I don’t understand the extreme desire to only own manual.

Tried very hard to like the manual in the Tacoma, but couldn’t. Long throws, deep clutch, for what?

It's what I am comfortable with and like, not sure what motivates others.

Experienced this today for my first Toyota care service. The service writer had to go out and move the truck in, he knew as soon as he saw a standard cut key it was a manual. Walked out and told the service guy he would take care of moving it. The service took well over an hour for an oil change and multi point inspection. They were really busy and I found out the service mechanic was waiting for someone to move it out of his bay and back outside!!!

How does a “mechanic” not know how to drive a stick shift?

I worked at a dealership 2012-13 we had a new kid start, when he went to go get his first car to bring in to the racks he came back in with the keys all confused and said this car has 2 brake pedals. I don't think I can drive it. Turned out he asked 2 other guys what was he was looking at. We had 3 at the time that couldn't drive or had never seen a manual transmission. That was 10 years ago. I'm sure it is worse now. This is considered a rural area.
Even not so funny from the customers point of view a week later he was asked to take a car though their car wash when he brought it back to the drive he was soaking wet and had the deer in the head lights look and wanted to quit. The car had a sun roof that was left open and he didn't know how to operate it so it went through the full cycle with it open and no clue how to close it. Interior was quite soaked.

i'm too much into power tools for something as prehistoric as a shovel.

if i'm gonna be digging myself a hole, i'm renting a backhoe.

In England if you take and pass your driving test in a manual transmission you can drive both A/T and manual. If you take your test in an auto you're only licensed to drive auto. In England 90% of the cars on the road are manual transmission, well it used to be that way when I took my test, now about 70% of all cars are manual.
