So, have they said whether or not this is covered under your warranty? I would think it is but you never know what a dealer might try and pull.
I think everyone reading this is really curious to know what caused this.
Best of luck getting this resolved!

Mine had the cylinder head failure notorious to the 2004,5, and most 6 years. Bought new, never towed/plowed/hauled anything heavy. Fastidious about 3K oil changes. Head let go at 70K, within the 5/100 powertrain PLUS the "secret warranty" on the head. The one two dealers claimed ignorance of until I found it in under 5 minutes on my Blackberry, and then claimed they wouldn't do it unless I paid and then argued with corporate.

Oil pressure issue can be related to broken or worn off teeth on oil pump rotors , the oil pump relief valve stuck open, the strainer tube came lose.
Oil pump housing is the part of timing chain cover and driven directly the crankshaft . Pretty simple design.
I can see how valves can get bent by broken chain but hard to believe the chain just went kaput after 70K

I believe this happened Chris, but there has to be more to the story. Interesting how different dealerships handle business. My local Toyota dealerships are tools.

Personally, I have never had a bad experience with GM. Then again, I'm not in the dealership needing repairs either. In the past 7 years/100k miles I have had two issues. Wheel speed sensor under 2000 miles on the truck that was intermittent. The dealership service manager gave me his personal cell phone number for when the speed sensor was tossing a code. I called him when the next time it happened and he met me out in the parking lot with a code reader, captured the issue and scheduled me for a speed sensor swap. I call that service above and beyond.

Second time the truck was well out of warranty and the DEF tank heater went out. They covered it without an issue and had me on my way in one hour. The dealership even gave me a free oil change voucher for my inconvenience. That was just this vehicle in a long history of GM ownership with similar results.

In gm land we call it a "special coverage program" it's basically a very extended warranty on a specific component but they don't notify you about it. You just show up at the dealer with the described problem like a regular joe and suprise! Your repair is fully covered for free

example is 2007-2013 style tahoes/suburban vehicles and their front wiper motors... 20 years or 240'000kms coverage if I remember correctly, from the original sale date of the first owner... in case thats anyone's second vehicle and their wipers stop working

For some strange reason it was sporadic.
One of my nitches was repairing the stupid hi pressure injectors. I would get one or two a week.
The suspect hi pressure injector would look like you baked the tip in oil at 500°.
It was a good thing I could run the two systems separate. The whole engine is way to technical.
And things are only going to get worse.
We had two 3.5’s in a two week period break valves.
One had 350 miles, the other had around 700.
All I know is I don’t have to put up With it anymore…

Just like they have self adjusting brakes lol. And they do have a self cleaning program however, doesn’t always work.

They have cleaning cycles that use the port injectors to clean the valves. The "self-cleaning" referred to is how the engine cleans the valves itself during this process.

It really is a pretty underwhelming engine overall. It has 4-5 well known flaws that haven't really been addressed. It makes mediocre power and all of it is at the very top. I like my truck but these trucks simply would have been better with the dual VVTI 4.0 motor instead. The 3.5L definitely seems much more complicated than it needs to be based on the digging I've done in the FSM.

    Exactly!

Folks here forget we're on an forum where a small complaint about steering wheel button layout can yield multiple pages of chatter. The 3.5 is used across quite a few models in their lineup with success.

Not according to chief engineer mike sweers who explained how the direct injectors have slits on the sides of them and at certain idle conditions it will spray the sides of the injectors to blow the carbon off.
