Has anyone attempted to open the tail lights? I have a 20' OR and would like to get rid of the chrome. Was just going to purchase the PRO tails but if I can go this route I will.

On my WRX it was pretty easy to open the headlights and dechrome them, I even have sealant left over

    Been done.

I would think it's similar to a headlights with the lens and inner parts, but I don't know for sure.

Awesome thanks, I think I'm just Gunna give it a shot. If all else fails looks like you can pick up used set of OEM lights for around $100

If it were me, I would go ahead and pick up a used to try with.

If anything goes wrong, you're not without working a set.

Don't know about the 3rd gen's, but the 2nd gen's tails inner and out shells are welded together. It's a major PITS to get them apart without destroying them. It's not the same type of assembley as the headlights.

So you kind of have to cut them apart and plastic re-weld them?

Yes, that is what I was leaf to believe from doing research on the subject many years ago. I wanted to blackout my taillights similar to doing doing my headlights. I believe the process is called sonic welding. Two plastic parts are held together in a jig, and are cold welded together using ultrasonic sound waves. That literally melts the 2 parts together.
