I would love to see data comparing the 4.0 1gr-fe vs 2gr-fks failure rate. I’d be willing to bet they’d be close to the same.

Would be nice to hear from OP on estimated repair costs and if it’s still under the powertrain warranty

I don’t know the theory. I had wrenches in my hand. Not microscopes..
I’m sure it has a lot to do with fuel additives, chamber swirling, valve timing, injector positioning.
Lots of QC issues and I have no idea how they got valves through that testing process. I guess the same excuse for bad hyd lifters I put in a Oldsmobile a few years ago and wiped out the cam and wore through the lifter bases in 250 miles….

True..conversely, my local Toyota is great.

Mine was the P0017 head failure, the valves were going from a defect in the valve seats/head. Except the dealers claimed to know nothing of this program even when I showed it to them. Oddly, corporate told me there's no way they wouldn't have known about it. There was even a diagnostic fee for the leakdown test I was charged that per the bulletin I should have been refunded by the dealer, they said something like "I don't care what that says, I don't work for free"

Are the 2GR valves a bad design or something? Always wondered why the P11 code is a popular one and why the issues happen.

The reality is the issues your seeing are early on in the trucks life which is a manufacturing defect and there for covered by warranty. There’s many examples of 3.5 engines going well into the 200k mile range with little to no work needed.

Actually the “self cleaning” is for DI injectors. There is a slit on the injector that shoots out fuel from the side to clean the carbon at hot idle.

Sorry to hear OP. Hopefully the warranty covers you. Mine on my '19 is up in about 7 months/12k miles...kinda getting nervous reading these stories.

If you're not covered, for the previously stated "$11k," there are much better alternatives for that price or even cheaper. Haha.

this is self-cleaning in action. The only issue with it is could be a weak HP pump not putting out enough the fuel pressure.

Idk about the valves being a bad design, but usually when you end up with a burn't valve, it never was machined quite right to seal from day 1.

True, I just find it odd that it seems to repeatedly happen to the same 2 cylinders on all the ones that fail. Almost like there are extenuating circumstances that encourage some to fail.

The percentage that fail are probably less then 5percent if all the 2grfks built

The key seems to be getting to 100k, judging by the failures thread. Once you’re past that you’re probably good.

the pain is that the warranty runs out well before that, and so people end up with massive unexpected repair costs and Toyota tells them to pound sand, even though it is likely a quality defect and nothing the owner did wrong.

I totally get that. In all fairness though a lot of those people were offered extended warranty purchases and declined. Now if Toyota was covering all these mishaps for the folks that declined purchasing the extended warranty then that wouldn’t very fair to the folks who did buy the extended warranty. Guess their are different ways to look at it. I had a few issues with my 2023 tacoma right from the start I called corporate and they gave me a free 10year/125k mile platinum warranty

If I thought I needed an extended warranty because there was even a small chance my engine might grenade before 100k, I would buy a different vehicle.

Exactly. And a lot of those warranties are utterly worthless with exclusion sections so big that they don’t seem to cover anything. So people get to the extended warranty portion of the purchase process and give them a simple “pass” out of lack of interest in worthless warranties.

Your talking mass production dude. Toyota is not perfect there is always that chance. In terms of exploding engines I’d still take my chances with Toyota over any other brand so there is no other brand to turn too
