    Steering rack is leaking.
Lower and upper u joint crap probably worn too.

on the upper collapsible rubber puck part I heard it’s better to just weld it solid and delete that feature.

On my previous German car I used rackdoctor for $200-300. Their site keeps crashing when I click Toyota.

what’s the best for Tacoma? Seems like RockAuto only has Cardone. Is that fine?

Do I want the Tundra rack upgrade? Fuck yeah. But it’s $1900. Maybe one day. Not sure about now.

I’m only on 33’s and don’t rock crawl every day.
I figure if my stock rack lasted this long and worked (170k) then for now I can get away with slapping in another one of the same thing to take care of this leak.

reman from dealer may cost more

so yeah. All my fellow old high mile Tacoma peeps with leaky racks tryna fix that leak
What is a good rack replacement

for now I’ve just been running M1 syn ATF in the res with some Lucas stop leak

Idk if fab work is needed for a Tundra rack or if it’s cheaper to build a used one
For now my garage space is tiny and I don’t have a welder (nor know how to weld)

bonus question: are the rack bushing nuts serrated? What does Toyota mean by “detent”? Has anyone messed theirs up?

I made the mistake of loosening the nuts in mine (instead of the bolts) and re-installed. Back when I pulled the rack out to put tie rods and solid bushings
It caused a clunk. Tightening the shit out of them only reduces or temporarily stops the clunk.

I’ll see if I can get new ones from the dealer and try replacing.IMG_5003.jpg

If you can find a 3rd gen taco in the junkyard with a good front end you can also use that steering rack. Not much changed between the 3rd gen and 2nd gen.

I mean that would be kinda sketch
DIY rebuild usually requires crazy tooling

junkyards still over price for one,
second, 3rd gen in a yard would be one that took a hit, and has miles

Cardone is trash. The paint will flake off immediately and it will look like shit. The last two I tried had cross threaded fittings and leaked upon install. I try to avoid reman racks and p/s pumps

Check out AAE, they make a lot of 100% new racks and pumps, I've had good luck with them

1st choice would be dealer. The truck is worth it

I was looking at CVJ Axles site and noticed they completely rebuild racks also but looks like you have to call them to get timetable and price.
Anyone use them for that and what results? They are in Denver.

@Basikbiker Tundra rack is around $1400 if it makes you feel better. Im about to finally get mine installed. If you are going to be running larger tires its a good upgrade to do.
