I knew it wouldn't go with no probs. It looks like the tapers on the after-market lower ball joint assembly where the ball joints go have a little bit larger diameter, nuts screw way past the cotter pin hole. Any ideas?, washers is all I have in mind atm.

If you're going to put a washer there I would recommend a locking washer.

What am I looking at here, is that the lower ball joint? 5 lug? Kind of looks like an outer tie rod.

Whatever it is, the boot is bleeding out. Possibly damaged from the removal tool? Going to need to replace that.

is this an aftermarket part? Is that the correct castle nut?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Just what are we working on?

Is your picture upside down?Or is the ball joint upside down which would explain the amount of threads being exposed!!! We all learn some lessons can be expensive!

On the 2wd 5 lug the nut is on the bottom

Is that even the correct Part?

If it is new How are the threads so rusty already?

That is outer tie on a 6lug.

Could be aftermarket misfit.....however most likely its be over tightened and damaged/stretched the top of the ball joint stud...

I've seen this on tie rods before where thats been over tightened.....usally just replace the tie end and fixes it....

If that was mine, I'd just shim the nut up with couple washers......and then change them out on next service period......

    On a 5 lug I change those every 40~50K........on 6 I'd do em every 60~75K.....

If you go and buy an unknow truck....put all these to the top of the todo service list......
especially if there's no zerts present......

That's it Silver taco, sorry, I should've added another pic further away from the part, I took one, just didn't add it. I changed out both sides, part#s GK90258 and GK90259 and the other side is off the same amount, that's what's making me think, like you said, slight misfit. haha, oh man, I didn't even let you guys in on what I was working on, ...1999 Prerunner, 260K on it, V6, bought new.

Yes the tie rod ball is original and the castle nut is original to the tie rod. The only thing that's not original now is the ball joint assembly. OK I did the washer thing, what I had in mind and reco'd. Now it's slightly misaligned, that makes sense though doesn't it, since it's been adjusted during tire changes to worn ball joints over time? Going to get it aligned tomorrow.

You ain't stretching a hardened 20 mm balljoint stud. It's the quality and wide open tolerances of aftermarket garbage. Assuming the taper is correct, and the nut is tight, that cotter pin is strictly eye candy.

Sorry I’m immature. I can’t stop laughing at the red “cotter pin” drawing.
