5%? No way. Toyota would have a massive class action lawsuit on their hands if it was any where near that. Probably closer to .05%. There are millions of these motors out there.

I have worked at the same multi franchised auto dealership for over 30 years (Toyota Lexus and BMW) I was down talking with the shop Forman at the toyota store today and I asked him about this problem because I own an 18 Tacoma v6 and while he has heard of this problem , it’s not common whatsoever , he said if it was a genuine concern there would be Tacomas sitting out back waiting on cylinder heads etc and it’s just not the case …can it happen ? Yes , will it happen ? Probably not . Our service department services close to 100 cars a day and we sell a shit ton of Tacomas .believe me I read these threads and it gets me nervous too but the actual seat of the pants data is that it probably won’t happen to most trucks and we have a bunch of customers with big miles on their trucks , I guess tve point I’m trying to make is that while it sucks that this has happened for a few , the vast majority of 2gr-fks engines will vibrate along to 200k miles with basic maintenance . Just my observation .

I have a couple of buddies that are dealer techs,,, and even the best brands have a few random motors that pop. Same sentiment, there are millions of these engines out there. Also most any new vehicle has an astronomical new engine charge, but you can thank the regulations, lack of used available, etc.

Toyota strives for 3% or less on total issues with their vehicles. Its likely less Than .25% for the engines.

    Yeah.
There are likely more GR series engines out there than any other Toyota engine, used across both the Toyota and Lexus lines. Of the GR series, there are likely more 2GR variants out there than any other variant if you look at all the models it has been used in. The GR family even includes the 4.0 1GR from the 2nd gen. The differences between the various 2GR versions are mainly around valve timing and type of fuel injection, and any tuning differences for the particular application. It's an engine, not a mini-van engine nor truck engine. There are variants going all the way through 8GR now (each number represents slight variances in bore/stroke/displacement, but basically the same core design). Just go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine if you want to learn more.

Things fail. The likelihood of a failed Toyota engine being a 2GR is pretty high just based on simple numbers.

This is what I keep telling myself so I don't worry.

I had a 2018 Heep need a cylinder head replacement at 200 miles. Didn't even have it a week. Not the kind of lottery I wanted to win. This sucks for the OP no doubt, but it falls under the category of not often, but shit happens. You don't feel that way when you're the unlucky one it happens to though.

All I can say is that I got in my Taco when it had 4 miles on it and except for the TSS water infiltration (that I never had), 3rd brake light water infiltration (that I never had) and HP fuel pump recalls it's been solid as a rock. I'm at 95,000 miles now and whatever happens from here on is out of my control and I'm too old to worry about it.

It's what I was told by the toyota sales manager when I bought my 2001 tundra. Maybe thats all changed now? You seem to hear more complaints lately. How many are legit idk.

Only 200K? I got 231K out of my 2006 Tundra! I will expect Toyota to give me a 5th Gen Taco if my 2019 SR5 doesn't go 250 or more.

I got 4 pennies on the dealer offering him a "more than fair" trade offer towards a brand new truck, and they flip the old one without an engine replacement.

Don’t sweat it, my 17 is at a little over 85xxx and all I’ve done is just basic maintenance. Oil change, transmission flushes and keeping the filters clean.

It’s a “bit” like when an airplane goes down with a big loss of life. It’s shocking, scary and everyone hears about it. But at the end of the day it’s extremely rare. I’m guessing critical failures have always been happening to Toyotas but you just didn’t hear about it as much years ago because there was no where to post about it.

Fix it, dump it and buy a 2021 Tundra with a 5.7. You’ll never look back.

My 2001 4.7 tundra is still running strong with over 300k miles. biggest cost issues I had were 4 sets of o2 sensors, 3 total exhaust systems, and a steering rack. Thats not counting the 2 timing belt kits that were done, along with aftermarket brake rotors.

The rack went at 200,003 miles. Dealer found a reman which saved me a boatload of money. Other than that it was mostly brakes and timing belts. Except a weird thing where one of the front stabilizer links broke. That got Moog replacement links, which the dealer could get faster and cheaper than OEM.
